Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 17, 2012 9:22 pm Now that its winter time, our roof is a good temperature to do work in. The problem is in the summer it gets very very hot (eg on a 40 degree day, the roof will be close to 70 degrees). I believe this impacts on the effectiveness of the air conditioner. If you do go into the roof space on a warm day, you can feel the heat radiating in from the colorbond roof. There is no sarking in our roof. I believe fitting sarking is the best way to prevent radiant heat from entering our roof space. If fitted during the build, I believe it’s pretty straight forward to fit. However its not in our roof and I would like to retrofit it. We have solar panels on the roof, so can’t really take the existing colorbond sheeting off to above the battens, so need to install on the underside of the battens. Has anyone tried to do that, and have they had any success? Here are a few pics of the roof space Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Retrofitting sarking in metal roof 2Jun 17, 2012 11:23 pm You can't retrofit sarking without lifting roof sheets but there is a solution. There is a product called " foil board " it is 10 mm polystyrene with reflective foil adhered both sides . It is light and easy to work with and you can fit it to roof battens between rafters or trusses. Do you have any roof space ventilation? If you have a reverse cycle air conditioner eco ducting might help. Re: Retrofitting sarking in metal roof 4Jun 18, 2012 11:04 pm Hi, thanks for the replies. Our air-con really struggles on hot days, so was thinking reducing the roof temp would help it along. Will take a look at the foil board. Any idea on the price of it? Re: Retrofitting sarking in metal roof 6Jun 19, 2012 9:44 am You could always wrap your trusses in the sarking which couldnt hurt, however I am surprised there is no sarking as in winter condensation forms under cb roofing which may damage your roof space. Although if you do wrap the trusses in sarking the condensation would still get in Building Standards; Getting It Right! Hi all I’m in VIC and had some storm damage in my garage a month ago.
