Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 05, 2012 12:10 am We are in a bit of a dilemma and we don't know who is talking the best way to go and protecting our interest. We will be building a house and we want to install split system AC - one unit at the family/meals and another one at the master bedroom - but our builder does not offer this and does not allow external contractors on the site during build. They said they can put provisions of 15 amps and 20 amps power points whichever we will need. When we seek for quotes, 2 different AC suppliers advised us that it is best to install wires and pipes before the plaster goes up. Thus, they will need to be allowed to come in during the build. They said that they do not need the 15 amps and 20 amps power point as they will wire them directly to the circuit. A colleague also advised to have the AC installed during the build as her split system was installed after handover and the pipe, covered with a hard plastic, was attracting mice that she can see mouse droppings in the area. I do not want this to happen to us as well so we are insisting to our builder to either offer the split system or allow the AC supplier at the site before plaster goes up. The builder is insisting that they can only provide the electrical provisions. Should we still insist or is the 15 amp or 20 amp electrical provision enough to neatly and properly install the split system without running the risk of attracting mice and other pests into the wires and pipes visible at the external wall? Thanks in advance for your inputs. Re: split system during build or after handover? 2Jun 05, 2012 6:57 am I think the main difference is the exposed pipe work, which is usually enclosed in a hard plastic cover, if you where concerned about vermin etc I would think you would be able to fill the end of the plastic duct with an expanding foam! Pipe work in the walls will always look better! But check with your a/c installer as the power is usually required at the outdoor unit with connecting wires between inside and outside! You may be stuck with the builder allowing others on site, it becomes his problem if anything goes wrong or someone gets hurt, its really protecting his trades, but pointless if its something they don't offer! You mind find also that your SS may bend the rules when on site, but don't count on it! 2 Re: split system during build or after handover? 3Jun 05, 2012 5:05 pm Insist the builder offers the solution or lets you sort it yourself. It will be neater and look better if the pipes and cables run through the walls. Personally I've never come across a builder that doesn't let you do one or the other... Re: split system during build or after handover? 4Jun 07, 2012 12:00 pm They still insisted that we can't bring our own! We are looking at getting their own contractor but its office is far from our building site. My husband is concerned that it will be more difficult to contact them to do repairs if in case there are problems and husband is not happy with feedback he reads about Dandy Air. I'm just crossing my fingers that our SS will be accommodating enough when the building starts unlike the girls at the head office.
