Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 29, 2012 11:10 pm Been in house for over 20 years and inherited a medium sized evap system with 5 outlets that worked beautifully for 18 years till old age took over and had to replace it. Went for same make but larger, salesman said it was the largest domestic unit available and we upgraded to 7 outlets even tho it is rated to 10. Also went for new rated ducting. Reason for saying this is to demonstrate that this unit is far larger than previous system. My problem is it is crap!! There were installation problems through poor installation workmanship but eventually after a year that was all resolved, but my main concern still exists that no one wants to know about. Simply, the air that comes out the vents is no where near as cool as the old system pumped out. Retailer had been out on many occasions and I have been on the roof myself to check and the pads are getting wet all the way through and visibly the unit should work brilliantly. So has anyone had wood chip pads (my old system) and replaced the system with Celdec pads (new system) as this is the only problem I can see. I have it in writing from the manufacturers technician that you cannot compare an old system to a new one which was extremely bizarre thing to say when I questioned pad efficiency with him. The best this unit can do is lower the temp by 6 degrees on low humidity days. Also have unequal air distribution thoughout the 7 vents, but that is another issue needing cleared up. Re: Anyone replaced an evap air cond? 2Aug 27, 2012 8:47 am Yes. We had a similar thing done. Moved into a house with existing evap cooler. Wer got the unit changed over to a Brivis but kept all original ducting and mounting hardware. I noticed an increase in cooling capacity with the new celdec ( that honeycomb cardboard stuff) compared to the "straw" panels that use to be there. Remember that the drop in temp by an evap system is totally dependant on the outside temp and humidity. ie You can't expect to drop 6 degrees if the outside temp is 24 degrees celcius. Also, airflow/air pressure and which windows you open play a part in this. .. just food for thought. HC Re: Anyone replaced an evap air cond? 3Oct 17, 2012 3:11 pm Hi all, I have a Brivis system too, 5 outlets, installed about 2005, and I can say that it will give a temp diff of about 10 deg normally. As advised I leave all the doors and windows openand that works OK for me. I was interested to learn the pads are not the wood wool, strawbale whatever material but a more durable and longer lasting probably synthetic material. I have a portable Bonaire model that I use on my back patio when I sit out there with a BBQ on a hot day, and it has the straw mat material, very simple and very effective, even outside on a 35 deg C day, under cover of course....it gets through about 20 litres of water (2 bucket fulls) in 4 hours, running at about 1/2 speed. If the air is moving straight through the cooling mats without enough resistance then you won't get much evaporation taking place, so that might be half of your problem. The straw pads seems to be more randomly and densly packed....can't say about the Brivis on the roof as I've never been up there to check, but with the spring on us, I might have to do a service myself to save money, after I find out what is required. I had the service guy in a few momths back to do the product recall mod they informed me I had to have. Another problem has just turned up, the fan slows down when the dial is turned up, and speeds up when the dial is backed off......oh dear....more money? Ian. How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5933 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
