Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 21, 2012 6:00 pm Hi All Hoping for some advice on fireplaces, We are looking at fireplaces but the space for it is basically in a bay window on bamboo flooring We hare looking for a wood fire enclosed as they seem cost effective, however not against looking at a suspended fireplace. If you could help with the below questions that would be great Is the proximity to a window and furnishings an issue? Will anything need to go under the fireplace to protect the floors? Any idea on cost of getting one installed, Im in metro brisbane? Any other recommendations and place to look with a good range and sound advice Cheers Re: Fireplace Advice 2May 21, 2012 9:58 pm Have a look at the suspended fire on my blog, but sit down when you read the cost. A floor mounted one at about $ 4000 to buy probably would cost a further $ 3000 in a simple plaster wall finish. Also have a look at the stone fireplace on my blog which was expensive ( about $ 10,000) but the look is absolutly marvellous. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Fireplace Advice 3May 22, 2012 3:22 am Hi The manufacturer of each heater will specify the clearances from combustible materials required on each side of the heater. The problems I can see with putting the heater in a bay window is 1) the heat loss through the window and 2) proximity to any window furnishing. You will need a hearth of non-combustible material under the heater - again the manufacturer will specify the requirements, but 800x800mm and 1000x1000mm are typical sizes. You can use file or stone etc. For our heater I purchased sandstone pavers and had these installed as a hearth. Finally there may be council restrictions in installing a wood heater - I'm not in Brisbane, so I'm not sure about your situation. I suggest you try the yellow pages for a local supplier/installer and ask their advice. Paul Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room. We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13719 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11569 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3321 |
