Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 20, 2012 10:11 pm Old 16 litre instant HWS is up for replacement, and advice would be appreciated about the optimum matching system size. Location Brisbane, gas is natural. We have three bathrooms of which perhaps two are in use at the same time. The old unit struggles with two hot taps open, and also with too much cold water mixed in during summer. I intend to get a remote-controlled unit this time, so that the exact temperature can be dialled up, removing the need to mix in cold water. To me this suggests 20-24 litre units, 26 possibly an overkill. The gas pipe is 2 cm, however, the water pipes fitted are all 1 cm diameter: would these make over 20 litre capacity a waste anyway? Next issue is the remote: wired units are cheaper to buy (especially on eBay), but installation would mean retrofitting in existing two-level timber house, tricky at places. My hunch is that wireless remotes could be line ball costwise: what do you reckon? Presumably, DIY installation of the remotes (especially wired) is not legal. Re: gas hot water system choice vs pipe size 2Apr 20, 2012 11:01 pm I'm pretty sure you can wire up the remotes yourself as my sparky said its all low voltage (on the rinnai anyway) its a dead simple task detailed in the manual. As its instantaneous our plumber put in a high capacity gas line to the new heater, to be honest I'm not sure it really needed it, I think we got touched there. With the new restrictions, ie wells ratings, water presure seems less of an issue. I would go for the biggest heater you can afford as the smaller ones can struggle with a larger house, that said I would definaltely go for a condensing model. We have been in our newly renovated house now for almost 4 months now and are eagerly awaiting our next gas bill. (yep we are a bit strange lol) So far the gas savings of the new heater have been dramatic, we will see how it goes in winter. Re: gas hot water system choice vs pipe size 3Apr 26, 2012 1:13 pm a 26L is not overkill for 2 showers simultaneously. A 24l would probably do it. You can install most brands of water controlllers DIY. Wireless set up in Rinnai is approx $400 for one control and then approx $200 per additional control (up to 4 total i think). Some water heaters are not compatable with controls such as builders units (B24 etc). A 1/2 line will restrict the flow into the home.
