Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Apr 01, 2012 2:11 pm Hi all, Im building a new home and after some advice for heating and cooling for a 26sq living house in leopold victoria, so far have been told conflicting ideas as to whether i should get gas ducted heating with add on cooling or a full electric aircon heating unit e.g daiken unit am unsure which way to go if anyone could help with pros cons would be great thankyou Re: gas ducted heating and aircon 2Apr 02, 2012 2:15 pm For Victorians you are best to go for Gas Ducted heating and add on cooling. Diaken is nice to have in areas where you use aircond more than heating. GAS especially if you get high efficiency is much cheaper to run than electric. Add on cooling is good to as long as you have it installed properly. Re: gas ducted heating and aircon 3Apr 02, 2012 3:21 pm I am in Adelaide but when we were renting we had a gas ducted heating system which cost a fortune to run as the whole house had to be heated - it was obviously a cheap system with no zones!! We were paying about $400 a quarter for gas and our first gas bill in our new house was only $81 although it wasn't winter - we have reverse cycle where we are now and solar hot water with gas back up. We are very happy with the air con and thanks to good insulation haven't had to use it too often. Hope that helps ... Re: gas ducted heating and aircon 4Apr 02, 2012 8:21 pm This is of course assuming you have natural gas available. Becomes cost prohibitive using LPG. Slab heating is much the same with out bills in N/E vic being about $1200 a qtr for heating along. Reverse cycle here we come. We then installed ducted evap cooling which is so cost effective. We've found that both units work well and are energy efficient. It did cost more than installing ducted reverse cycle but we figure it will pay for itself within a year or two.
