can you have split system and evap together

We have a 300sq house in western nsw We are struggling to find the right cooling/heating system. Our summers are perfect for evaporative systems, some humid days though. We have been told our house is too big for 1 refrigerated system we would need 2, we have been told the same for evap as well.
we will have a large wood heater for winter, but would like ducted heating as a back up.
We have considered this:
ducted evaporative for bedrooms
split ducted system for large open living/dining/kitchen area and separate home theatre and rumpus room
That way we can run evap in rooms (4 bed) at night. Only time the bedrooms are used.
Run split system during day in summer and heating when needed in winter.
Please help, this is really doing our heads in!!
We were forced to have both (screw up with roof cavity spaces) when we extended and have ended up with pretty much what you describe. We have a large open plan room that is cooled by a split and the original part of the house including 2 bedrooms is cooled by the original evap. In the end it has worked quite well because on the milder days we run the evap, open up the back and the breeze comes right through. We have hydronic slab heating which will only get turned on in the colder months so the split will be usefull on those snap freeze days we get here.

Only word of warning, you cant run both airconditioners at the same time, without seperating the rooms. If you did the split would be struggling as it would be dumping all the moisture out of the air that the evap was pouring in, they dont play well together.
Your house is not that big you should be able to get refrigerated.
How big is the living area??? IS 300 including garage and outdoors areas for example.

If you do go refrigerated you will be best to have 3 phase power supply.
Agree with sceen7 - you cannot run both together. Also consider that the evap works best with windows open and the split with windows closed.

Not sure of your budget but take a look at the ActronAir range. http://www.actronair.com.au Their 3phase 25Kw ESP Plus/Ultima system will do 500m2 or more into up to 8 differently controlled zones for around $20-25K (vic regional price)

I've run a split and an evaporative together for years successfully, because I set it up to work properly.
The main living area (kitchen, dining, lounge) can be closed off with two doors to separate it from the rest of the house (bedrooms & wet areas).
There are two evap ducts in the main living area, to which I added electric dampers (butterfly valves) to the ducting, and they can be closed at the flick of a switch. that way, the evap air is directed to the rest of the house and the main area can be cooled refrigeratively for those humid days that the evap struggles.
