Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Dec 16, 2011 9:13 pm We are building currently and can't afford to put airconditioning in but were wondering if it's worthwhile putting in wiring or something before the gyprock goes up while it's nice and easy. I don't know when we'll be able to afford something and I don't know what we would want when we are ready. We're in Brisbane, so not too fussed about heating. For the couple of weeks a year that would need heating we'll make do with oil heaters, so thats not an issue. We're planning on putting ceiling fans in each room (although that's going to add up too, but it is the plan as they are quite cheap to run) Really I would hope that we don't have to use it too much, as I like to keeps costs down, but DH likes the idea, and we thought it's at least worth considering, especially if there is some way to put something down for the future that doesn't cost too much now, and makes it affordable later on. So if anything, what should we put down? It's a two storey place, so we'd need to take that into consideration as well. Just wiring, or some kind of tubing as well so if we do decide on ducted it's already there? What is it likely to cost? While everything is open and easy can we just get pipes of some sort and put them in ourselves? And surely it wouldn't cost too much more to get our electrician to lay down some aircon wire? Or is it a waste of time, especially considering I have no idea what would be best for us anyway and things are tight as it is. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated! Re: Preparing new build for aircon for the future? 2Dec 17, 2011 5:42 am Ceiling fans are cheap to run but one issue is that they are around 300mm below the ceiling. This means that if you have the standard room height of 2.4m the fan is only 2.1 m from the floor which is a bit close if you are tall or have tall visitors. Adding to room height can increase the cost of the house to more than the cost of a couple of reverse cycle split systems. see link http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=120 When we had our house built we had the power installed to the proposed site of our air conditioning and it was fairly reasonable.
