Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 07, 2011 7:08 am The electrician's have done all the wire's for the phone's in our house and i just had a phone call for a trench,i'm sure we as in mu husband dug the trench for the phone line here(old house),and i was wanting too know is it as simple as digging a trench from the house too the telsra point.. As i felt that the $350 for doing that seemed a little high?? Am i right in feeling it's as easy as digging a hole?? Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 2Nov 07, 2011 9:22 am Sounds about right. We have just had our phoneline installed on Friday, but we were luck as DP's father works for Tesltra so he did the whole trench (took about 15mins to dig and only about 5 meters) and all Telstra had to do was the actually connection in the pit (about 5mins) and cost us $300. It still cost us the same amount to connect as to if they also dug the trench. It comes down to contractors having to come out etc and coordinating times. Not sure what state your in as it may be different in each state. Good luck Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 4Nov 09, 2011 7:01 am Hi Telstra will charge $299 for the installation/activation of a phone line where there is no in-place service (a new house, or a house where the service was disconnected more than about 6 months ago if the line has been re-allocated to a new customer elsewhere in the suburb). Telstra will often waive this charge if you sign up on a contract with them. The trench for the physical installation of the line is separate to this charge. I believe Telstra prefers if the builder/customer provides it -http://www.telstra.com.au/smart-community/download/document/leadin-trenching-requirements-0609.pdf but they may do it on a fee-for-service basis. The $350 you have been quoted is probably from your builder to dig the trench rather than Telstra, but I may be wrong. You can certainly do it yourself as long as you comply with the specifications in the Telstra document and your builder will let you. Paul Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 5Nov 09, 2011 9:52 am Thank you for all the info.... When i went too the block in the morning i could smell stale dirt in which i told me husband,we went back that afternoon and im sure its been done.. Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 6Nov 21, 2011 12:45 pm I think our trench was about $30m to be dug. If you have electrical, storm water, fresh water and sewer all crossing the path of your phone trench needs to run (like me ) then $30m is cheap. It'll cost us about $400 and by the time either I dig it out (is got to be 400mm deep and 200mm wide) by hand or hire a machine I'll be either really sore or $50 in front if I miss everything else. Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 7Nov 21, 2011 12:56 pm You will pay $299 connection fee but we had to dig the trench ourselves or contract someone to do it, it wasn't something Telstra or our builder offered us...Took all of 15-20mins for DF & FIL to do it...worth the saving of $350 IMO The road to success is always under construction House completed April 2011 - slowly making it a home... Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 8Nov 21, 2011 1:41 pm We got a subbie in to do ours, it was just waaaay to difficult, and we didn't have the time when we had to do it. Ours crossed from one side of the property to the other, was very close to the power conduit and the Neighbours gas line, then had to go under the footpath, the neighbours crossover and naturestrip in order to get to the closest pit. There was no way we could have done it ourselves! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Was a little strange for us at first after living in the city for 37 years. Regards, Grumbles Re: $350 for phone line trench?? 13May 26, 2012 4:28 pm On our quote for Casa Reccymech it had $90 for the phone points, and $446 for the 32mm conduit from house to pit location. I questioned SWMBO re: this cost, as I reckon like NEWLYWEDS - whats a phoneline (who has landline these days?), err......all the NBN (if we get it) and internet 'stuff' needs it. So here's me shelling out more beer tickets. $350 for phone line trench?? 14May 26, 2012 11:20 pm Ours was $299 to connect but cos a dead lady connected her phone in my brand new house once they disconnect it I can get mine connected and won't have to pay the connection fee, not sure how they will get their money from the dead lady considering she has been dead for a few years and the phone was only connected last week.
