Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 28, 2011 9:03 pm Hi hubby and i are weighing up the pros and cons for either having a Evaporative cooling or a split system cooling??? hubby wants 2 split systems, 1 - living area, 2 - master bedroom ( he feels the heat) me i would be happy with just the ceiling fan in the master bedroom... i love warm weather i think that if we have evap cooling we can please everyone by having points in all the main areas of the house now all we need is some expert advise so we can do further research thanks in advance Building The Harvard 271 With Dennis Family Homes My Blog http://www.ourhouseinwallan.blogspot.com My Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51625&p=789135#p7891353 Re: Evap or split system 2Oct 29, 2011 7:57 am We have had evap cooling for about 5 years now and absolutely love it Evap cooling is great because it actually works best if you have doors or windows open which is also great when you have kids running in and out of the house on a hot day, where split systems/refridgerated you need all doors and windows closed for it to work best and also only cools a couple of rooms for each unit where evap cooling works throughout the whole house. A bank is a place that will lend you money only if you can prove that you don't need it... Re: Evap or split system 4Oct 29, 2011 5:26 pm We have just got a quote done with both because we live in a 2 story. We are putting evap in upstairs to 7 points for $4000 fully installed and downstairs we are going to have a split system. Id love to just have evap because it is ALOT cheaper to run, Averages around 15 cents an hour to run comp to ref split system can cost up to $1 an hr, but cant put evap downstairs. The split systems are $3000 each. So go evap, cheaper to run, better systems and less outlay. Have now experienced a couple of warm days - around 30-ish degrees and have gone out and bought two split systems - one for Master BR and one for Princess's bedroom. The Evap is fine for downstairs for a few hours - but then it gets far too "moist" in the air for my liking. It gets sticky and the floor feels damp - yuk. We have a ceiling fan in the Master Bedroom. There are only a few days a yr where the humidity is so high it doesn't work properly. It's cheap to run and works perfectly. Some days we just have the evap on vent/fan, it's great, having the breeze throughout the house and it dries the floors in five minutes Re: Evap or split system 8Oct 30, 2011 8:13 pm It really depends on where you live. Down here in Melb evap has no probs that I found with dampness. Mainly because you have to have a few windows open for the system cycle the air around. Yes it doesnt keep you cool on really hot days like 38 deg + but it still is comfortable. It really biold down to what you like and how much your prepard to pay as a outlay and running costs. Evaps' will always be cheaper to run, but the gap is narrowing alot! I like both, but they both have their limitations. Refrig AC, you need to keep the house closed up and not let the cooling out, humdity can be very low and you can control the tempreture accurately. EVAP's you can run with the doors open and not worry about "letting the cooling out", but they can raise humidty alot. It really does depend on your locations and family situation.... and budget of course IMO ideal house HVAC is.... Gas ducted heating, Evap for the whole house and a Refrig AC (say 2-3.5kw) for the master bedroom. Re: Evap or split system 10Nov 06, 2011 8:23 am I live in Melbourne so evap cooling will work fine, as its rare we have alot of humid days .... unless we have a summer like last year and i have 2 gremlins i mean 2 lovely children i guess like most i want the best for my budget (i usually have champagne taste but a beer budget) we are planning to get away with something installed for under $4k.... well thats the plan at this stage. house is not built yet so we have a bit of time to investigate different options we are building a single story, approx 28sq Building The Harvard 271 With Dennis Family Homes My Blog http://www.ourhouseinwallan.blogspot.com My Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=51625&p=789135#p7891353 Re: Evap or split system 13Nov 07, 2011 8:58 am Evap sound like the winner. We then started really open up the windows and the dampness stopped. It's a cool breeze not cold air so you feel sort of fresh. It's also good for just blowing out kitchen smells using just the fan function. I do find it to be quite cold overnight but that then cools the house right down so that the next day it's already cool before the sun heats up again. If you like to be really cold go refrigerated but it's expensive to run On the odd humid day you can just run it with the fan which is better than nothing Re: Evap or split system 15Nov 07, 2011 10:19 am We had our evap going on the weekend, it was 30 here. It was actually really cold even with just the fan on. My Son, put the biggest unit in and huge vents, our Kitchen family room is quite big and with two of the big vents down there, it was heaven.
