Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 28, 2011 6:25 pm When I was at the local bunnings I was looking through the insulation materials for insulating around doorways. There appeared to be a number of different types of materials that could be used to provide seals around ill fitting doorways. One of the main companies had products that were “open cell” and others which were “closed cell”, both of which were claimed as being suitable for heat retention. Is there a major difference between the too products in terms of performance? I figured that the denser product (closed cell) would provide a better barrier to heat loss but the springier product (open cell) would allow for a tighter fit (therefore reducing large gaps between the frame and the doorway). There appeared to be a significant price difference between the products. Re: Open cell vs closed cell insulation for doorways 2Aug 28, 2011 6:48 pm I think the major difference is appearance. The closed cell strip looks a lot better and doesn't collect dust like the open cell foam. The open cell foam is better if the gaps are uneven. In overall performance I don't think there is any difference The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Open cell vs closed cell insulation for doorways 4Sep 02, 2011 7:04 pm This link explains 'R values'. http://www.anewhouse.com.au/?p=552 IMO as the area of the gap is relatively small 'R values' are nowhere near as important as a good seal my previous comments are why the closed cell is better The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
