Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 23, 2011 1:53 pm Hi, Seeking advice on the effectiveness of ducted cooling via floor vents. We have ducted gas heating at our home in Sydney, which is a godsend in winter. However, we have no aircon, only a couple of fans. which was a problem last summer, so we are looking into options for airconditioning and we came across the idea of adding cooling to our existing, 12-year-old Carrier gas heating which is piped through floor ducts. Different installers have given us different opinions as to the viability of doing this. Some say yes, we can do this for $7,500 (which includes widening the outlets) and it will have an effect, though not as strong an impact as a brand new ceiling-vented system that would of course cost a lot more. Ceiling vents would also be a bit problematic as the hottest areas happen to be ones with ``cathedral ceilings'' -- i.e. no roof access for aircon vents. Re: Adding Cooling to Ducted Gas Heating 2Aug 23, 2011 1:59 pm your 12 year old system is to old. The fan speeds of that era and not good enough to cater for cooling. While it is possible and will work to some degree it definitely will not be optimal!!!!. Either Get Split systems, or add Evap cooling. Re: Adding Cooling to Ducted Gas Heating 3Sep 02, 2011 12:04 pm One of the other options would then be to get a new heating system installed with add-on cooling -- a fairly expensive option but then none of this would be especially cheap. How effective are new systems of this kind on the cooling front? Re: Adding Cooling to Ducted Gas Heating 5Sep 15, 2011 2:36 pm We have a five-bedroom house, with an open plan living/dining room area. When I try working it out in my head seems to me we have 100 square meters or so of living space... that sounds crazy big to me but I did that by taking the smallest bedroom, which is 4 square meters (3 meters by 1.3) and fitting it over all the other areas. Latest gas heating bill was $925 which was for the depths of winter (three months to Aug. 2) Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
