Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 22, 2011 5:40 pm Hi, The house we have just bought (single storey, brick, tile roof, near Newcastle) has some old bats in the roof. Various different thicknesses and colours and it only covers about half of the total ceiling area. We have asked for quotes to do a better job and are getting conflicting advice about whether to remove the old bats first or leave them and put the new ones over the top of the old ones. Does anyone know what is best? CharlieB Re: Need to remove old ceiling insulation? 2Aug 22, 2011 9:12 pm I have always added Batts, never taken any out The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Need to remove old ceiling insulation? 4Nov 02, 2011 12:27 am Hi CharlieB You might have already acted on this, but I'll respond anyway. Batts are lightweight, so you can install new batts over the top of your existing. If your existing insulation was blow-in, we would recommend removing it, as it is heavy on ceilings and additional weight could cause ceiling damage. The company saying you have to remove the batts are probably just looking to make more money ! Re: Need to remove old ceiling insulation? 5Nov 02, 2011 9:52 am I recently spent a week removing old batts from my roof, what a disgusting job that was the reason I did it though was because they were about an R2 rating to begin with, covered in 15years of dust (from the drought) and ontop of over a 100 years of dust. Yep i vacumed out all of that on top of lathen plaster.... still have ptsd. I'm thinking of putting earthwool 3.5 back in as its only 25 bucks a bag at the big green shed atm. At that price i could even double it up, but im worried that the compession of two layers of batts will defeat the purpose. I will also be putting in some wall batts on internal walls for a bit of sound proofing and wondered which brand was best for that. I have used some high density batts in the past and they work well.... but were itchy as hell. How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5936 0 1341 Found the answer. The recommended distance is .... 1 5970 |
