Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 03, 2011 7:31 pm Our house is nearly completed. Today I took off the grille of the return air vent and discovered that there is no filter on the grille and that the cavity/void is not lined and there is only a piece of flex with a square metal collar been placed at ceiling height. Is that a normal or acceptable installation? I ask this, as all installations I have seen elsewhere have a large metal box inserted into void which connects up to the flex. Is it necessary for grille to have filter on it too? Does your expertise extend to my other question regarding the void install? However like you say a box would be better. Again this is probably more important in a refrigerated cooling system were it is important to have insulated pipe right through to the return air box. The other issue you have is the wrong way have running the ducting if you have a plumbing audit they will knock this method back The right way of sealing the duct is either by metal or even plastic return box or the way i do it is to seal the top of the cavity and cut a metal collar in to it then attach the duct to it . You have every right to complain bout the way the duct has been left in the cavity and if they won't do something bout it tell them you will get a plumbing inspector out to have a look and they will fix it straight away or get a fine by the plumbing board also make sure you get a plumbing compliance certifcate for the heating system. Return air vent query - Bonaire Gas Ducted Heating 8Aug 05, 2011 9:23 am Thanks Brad75. It does have a metal collar to seal it off at the top with the flex poking out into void. I guess my concern was that it does not have a metal box, but from what you and others say, it doesn't need one if void has been sealed off properly at the top. Thanks for the tip with the filter. Should I get them to install a grille that can handle a filter? Is a filter necessary. And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5900 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
