Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 14, 2011 8:07 am We are building a house and Have ducted air con to all rooms, plus the electrician has wired the bedrooms for fans if we want them... I'm now purchasing light fittings for all our rooms and need to decide if we should get the fans for the bedroom (with the light in them) or not... Anyone care to share what they've done or wish they'd done, or any other comments greatly appreciated! Im guessing the fans would get used and probably cheaper to run than air con, but they're a bit ugly so thought I'd ask to see what others thought.... Thanks!!! Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 2Jul 14, 2011 10:24 am Part of the decision would be based on where you live I guess. We are in NSW. We also have ducted air, we don't have fans in bedrooms. Had them in the rental we were in before we built though. I thought that with ducted air, we wouldn't miss the fans but i do. Mostly it's not hot enough to sleep with the air on but it was always nice to sleep with the fan on low in Summer. You can get nice looking ones or hideaway ones. This is one thing I would do differently. PS. Don't miss the loud clicking noise our rental fans made, in my own house I'd want good ones that don't make much noise. Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 3Jul 14, 2011 10:28 am We're going with both. All rooms will have the air con but, just like buzz says, sometimes all you need is some air moving around to just make it comfortable. So as long as you get the ones that are well balanced, I'd do it. We'll be going with Fanaways when it's time. Was just reading another old forum and someone wrote you don't need extra wiring for fans with a light, as they just use the light wiring. Is this true? Does that mean the electrician has charged us for both a light and a fan, when he only put in one wire?? Thanks Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 6Jul 14, 2011 7:18 pm Chipstick Was just reading another old forum and someone wrote you don't need extra wiring for fans with a light, as they just use the light wiring. A remote controlled fan does not require any extra wiring but in my experience can be a pain to operate. A regular fan/light does require 1 extra wire, a permanent active and one switch active for each of the fan and light. Hope this helps. AJ Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 7Jul 14, 2011 7:28 pm We are in Vic and we are having both ducted air conditioning in all rooms and fans in the bedrooms and two living rooms. Believe the extra wiring is for the speed control of the fan. Our fans have lights as well. Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 8Jul 14, 2011 7:58 pm We have a ceiling fan in our room, with the light and remote. It's better to have a fan as well as you don't want to run the ducted air all night. I have portable fans for my 2 boys. We are having evap cooling, DS is installing it, very happy with the cost Re: Have ducted air con, worth getting bedroom fans too? 10Jul 15, 2011 9:52 pm suh We have air and fans too. There isn't a night in summer that we don't have the fans on. I can't sleep in air cond, but the fan breeze is perfect. me too, plus fans are cheaper to run.
