Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 08, 2011 11:19 am Hey there We have received four quotes for gas ducted heating for our small house. The house is only 80m squared in total and we are getting vents in all rooms except for the bathroom and laundry. Our ceilings are just over 3m high. What we need assistance with is where to put the recycled air vent. Two companies that have quoted us say that it is fine to have this in the ceiling (which would be our preference for athestic reasons) but two companies have said that the vent will have to be at floor level to ensure that the whole room gets heated and not just the top half of the room. Can anyone advise us what is the best please. Thanks so much Re: Where should the recycled air vent go 2Jul 10, 2011 12:55 pm We have it in the ceiling at one end of the hallway. I visited many new display houses before we built ours and noticed that most (if not all) of those that had ducted gas heating had the vent in the ceiling. I'm not clear how such vent could be installed at the floor level but woukd be interested to know. “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end” http://www.buildinganewhome.com.au Re: Where should the recycled air vent go 3Jul 10, 2011 1:56 pm Our current one is in the wall at floor level and is currently Little Miss' favourite toy In the new house its in the ceiling in the minor bedroom hallway Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! I think lower down is the preferred position as it drags the warm air down but I wouldn't be against having it in the roof again if need be. 80sqm is very small and I don't think it's worth losing valuable storage space or whatever to have it in the wall. Re: Where should the recycled air vent go 5Jul 10, 2011 4:02 pm if your heater is big enough and has a strong enough fan it wont be to much of a problem. If it is underdimensed then it may be an issue. I have mine in the celing with no real issue. Re: Where should the recycled air vent go 7Jul 19, 2011 7:52 am jymmit i would suggest getting a vent in the bathroom - nothing nicer than a warm bathroom in the middle of winter I totally agree with this ^ It will help to 'dry out' the room in winter also and possibly help prevent mould. In both houses (new and old) I've had the vent at floor level. Old house was in the bottom of the linen cupboard (ducting was through the floor) and new house is in the hallway...this house is double storey and not suitable to have the return air duct in the ceiling on the lower level. Perhaps these days for single storey it's easier to put them in the ceiling Having it at floor level means it's easy to run the vac over it while doing the floor. I'd forget about it in the ceiling...out of sight, out of mind!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! However if you have your hot air outlet on the floor then the combination of the fan force and hot air will more than likely push the hot air higher. Heaters these days have much faster and better performing afns in them to help propel the heat down. Re: Where should the recycled air vent go 10Jul 19, 2011 3:33 pm This is the first winter we have been in our house, return air vent is in the ceiling in minor hallway, my DD rooms run off this hallway, whilst most of the house is comfortable the rooms off the minor hallway are freezing. I have put this on our maintenance report and will see what the builder says. I have never seen the return air vent in the ceiling before, previously had it in the wall and checked other family members homes and they are all in the wall, their houses are older homes not new builds. Someone will need to get into the roof. Hi B Star, thats what we thought intially and we have had the company who installed the heater back, our SS called them back soon after we moved in, they kept sending out this young guy who got up the roof and said that there were no restrictions and all was ok, the size of the unit etc is ok so he could not work out why - suggested we call them back and ask for a senior person from the co to come out with a flo meter to check it out - so thats why I have put it all in the maintenance report, hoping that we will finally get an answer. In the design phase I never allowed a space in the lower level(double story house) to be set aside for the return for the Gas ducted heater. Now I have to build a box out to get the return air on the bottom level. If you can put it at floor level close to your living area. It will be a compromise for single storey but it's a must for double storey houses. It doesnt need to be as obvious as most people would image. Every bend or sharp turn, on an incline in the ducting all adds up. How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5945 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
