Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 11, 2011 7:29 pm Hi Folks, I am about to build a double story home as an owner builder. I have chosen a flat colorbond roof for this house. I am a bit concerned about the ducted air conditioning in this house. As compared to the traditional pitched roof, there is far less space to install the air conditioning machinery in the roof. On the higher side, the roof cavity is around 600mm and becomes a lot lesser on the lower side. So, it seems it may be hard to install the big ducted AC system until unless I create a false sealing (void) by increasing the building height. Has any one encountered any problems with the air conditioning installation in the flat roof, if yes, what were the ways around it ? I will appreciate your suggestions. Re: Ducted air conditioning in Flat roofs ? 3Jun 15, 2011 11:56 am I have a flat roof double story but half of it has a higher pitch skillion style roof. That's often the solution used to get heating/cooling units in the roof. The clearance in that section goes from 900 to 1.5ish I think. Also consider that you will undoubtedly require access for maintenance and thats available in my flat roof section of the house. If you just have heating though, the unit is generally smaller (doesn't need as big a fan) and I've seen that done in a flat roof. Most people I've seen who want AC in flat roof houses go with wall mounted split systems. Ducted air conditioning in Flat roofs ? 4Jun 15, 2011 1:10 pm Flat roofs can be quite challenging for ducted installations if not at installation there is also service and maintenance to consider. In many cases it means after finish off certain parts of the system are just not accessible unless gyprock is cut or alike. Although it does come at an additional cost to conventional ducted air conditioning, VRF 'multi' systems allow almost endless solutions to air conditioning flat roof and architecturally designed homes. We have some info on the Toshiba products on our website if you want to take a look. http://www.ampleair.com.au/multi-vrf-ai ... g-systems/ Good that you are thinking about it now, Best of luck. That's just the ducting though, I've no idea how much room the system needs.
