Open fireplaces are notorious for losing most of the heat up the chimney. Plus you don't have to worry about logs falling out of the fireplace. I'm a bit biased though as we have a woodfire. They also mean that most of the smoke goes up the flu. With an open fire if you get a smokey start to a fire ( happens occasionally) it will come into the room. As long as you pick one with a nice glass section you can enjoy the look of the fire. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is ours. It's not really roaring in this pic though. If we can't have that (or have the budget for that!) then we'll probably go for the open fire. I have started a new thread in hope we may be able to remove the one we have at our current house and use it in the new place. viewtopic.php?f=20&t=48420 Thanks again Building in Bacchus Open fireplace or Coonara? 7Jun 08, 2011 10:58 pm I think your key word was "ambiance"..
