Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 19, 2011 5:24 pm I'm after some advice on how to get a traditional open fireplace going again. I have had a chimney sweep inspect the chimney etc and quote me for a job i think I can pretty much do myself. He mentioned some packing material that will have to be used to cover a gap between the brickwork and the metal insert. Anyone know what this material might be? Obviously fireproof but not asbestos lol. Any tips welcome Re: Open Fireplace 2May 23, 2011 11:29 pm Hi, Don't know anything about construction, however have you considered having a slow combustion insert put into the open fire? They produce allot more heat and are far more efficient, as open fires can't reach the optimal temperature for combustion, lack of secondary burning chambers etc. They also suck allot of your warm air up the chimney etc, a quick google can tell you more... Have allot of friends with older places which had open fires and have replaced them with combustion heaters...i love the idea of open fires...just they're not very practical. Re: Open Fireplace 3Jun 26, 2011 10:34 pm agreed this is not a practical fireplace. The room it wil be in is our master bedroom which will have a hydronic heating panel in it. So the fireplace is purely ...ornametal/ romantic afterthought lol. Either way it will only get lit a few times a year Re: Open Fireplace 4Jun 27, 2011 2:44 am sceen7 I'm after some advice on how to get a traditional open fireplace going again. I think they like to see it has been cleaned properly and regularly. Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room. We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13724 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11584 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3336 |
