Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 13, 2011 4:12 pm Hi All, I'm hoping that someone can give me a bit of advise regarding a condensation problem. I recently noticed a spot of mould near the head unit of our split system air-conditioning unit. We had a guy come out and have a look at it. He had a look in the ceiling cavity and found that the pipe insulation was also covered in condensation (saturated is the word he used). He also said that the outside unit had been installed too close to the wall and that was causing some problems as well. The outside unit has been moved but the condensation is still there dripping off the pipe insulation in the wall causing damage. There are batts in the ceiling and a tile roof. The house is only four or five years old. Any ideas on what I should be looking at doing next, do I need to ventilate or is there something else I can do. Cheers, Chris Re: Condensation on Split System Pipes 3Mar 14, 2011 12:24 pm He made a comment that the roof cavity was incredibly hot while he was up there inspecting the pipe work (it bucketed down all that day, we had at least three inches of rain). He didn't say that that was the problem or that excess and humidity caused the condensation. It would seem that he left it up to us to figure it out for ourselves. He also made the comment that the outside unit being too close to the brick work could be a contributing factor (it was real close to the house and did generate a lot of heat which it is no longer doing). The only idea that I have come up with is to replace some of the tiles with ventilation to improve air flow which may help reduce the temperature in the ceiling. The only other thing I was wondering is if it is possible to increase the insulation around the pipes between the head unit inside and the outside unit. Re: Condensation on Split System Pipes 4Mar 15, 2011 10:15 pm Moist air + cold surface = condensation Insulate the pipes or stop moist air from getting near the pipes. Re: Condensation on Split System Pipes 5Mar 25, 2011 9:59 pm Agree with dymonite - the pipes should be insulated regardless (if it is a very old installation it probably isn't) Am curious as to whether this 'split' system is wall mounted or ducted. If wall mounted the ceiling insulation etc is essentially irrelevant in relation to condensation (but good for efficiency!) I need to get the plumber out to give me an explanation. As mentioned I haven't seen any rain water discharge from pipes 1& 3. It… 7 10834 |
