Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Feb 15, 2011 7:42 pm Hello All, Have been reading this forum back to front since we decided to build. Have picked up lots of hints and haven't had a need to ask any questions yet. I am going with a private builder that provides standard 2.5star heating and cooling. I want to upgrade to a 5star gas ducted heating, and don't want evap cooling. The builder is happy for me to get quotes from other installers and he will work with them, crediting me the amount of what his specs would cost. Below are 2 quotes that I have gotten, would appreciate feedback from the comunity if it is reasonable pricing. To me they seem just a tad too high for just a 28sq house. Quote 1: Supply and fit Brivis Add-on air conditioning system to 11 outlets. Brivis Hx 35i With Networker controller 21kw indoor coil 21kw outdoor condenser $13,830 Gst inclusive. Cost of electrical not included Quote 2: Gas Ducted Heating Gas & Add On Refrigerated Cooling We recommend a Brivis HX30i (5 star) gas ducted heater complete with a Brivis Ice 15kW add on refrigerated cooling coil ducted to 12 round ceiling mounted down jets; we include 3 zones, R1.0 fire rated ductwork, full installation and commissioning. $12,190.00 Inc GST From what I can see the first quote is using a bigger unit providing less outlets. Second quote is using a smaller unit and providing more outlets. Any further questions I should be asking would also be appreciated. I am building in western side of melbourne. Regards, K. Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 2Feb 15, 2011 8:24 pm I dont know much, just from the research I did with our house but Quote 1 seems reasonable in terms of price. Quote 2 the 15kw seems small? It depends on your zoning - we were recommended the 30 heater with the 18 cooler but got the 35 and 21 even thought we were told that regardless it wouldnt cool the whole house (the 35 heater is major overkill, but need the fan for the 21 cooler) Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 3Feb 17, 2011 10:02 am kermut, who are the two installers??? Generally your price sounds good. However from all the reading I have done the installation is the biggest key to success. Also Over dimensioning air conds and heaters are not always a good idea as the units can cycle to much. If this happens then you loose the effect of de -humidifying the house and the aircond actually works harder and costs more to run due to stopping and starting. Airconditioners also are most efficient after 20-30minutes of operation. Hi Bam, with your system you are going to have to have at least 150 squaremeters open (in terms of zoning) when you have the aircond on. Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 4Feb 17, 2011 12:44 pm Some interesting reading when working out aircond size. http://www.proctoreng.com/articles/better.html Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 5Feb 18, 2011 8:30 am Thanks Bstar and Bam. Seems the price is consistent then. The first installer is the one that the builder uses, the second one was someone local. I noticed the first quote had 3phase power requirement, so contacted them abt this, and asked for something that isn't going to require 3phase as it is much more expensive to install initally. His reply was that is true, but the single phase unit is not going to cool all of the house at the same time, but would require zoning, ie living and bedrooms. So at any given time, we are either cooling the living rooms, or the bedrooms. I think that is acceptable, but don't know how it would work in real life. Was hoping to get feedback from others on the forum who have done something similar. Regards. K. Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 6Feb 18, 2011 8:46 am Yeah you need to think about your needs and wants. The 21Kwatt is a better system if you think you want to cool the house all at once. You really also need to think about running cost. A 21kwatt system will possibly be to strong for a small area(living) and will not work that well, so this means that if you just had the living area on it may cycle to much and not get a chance to work properly. If end up not using your air cond because your scared it cost to much to run then thats no good also. From my experience some installers like to over dimension cooling because they may not properly install the duct work and increase to much resistance etc. A bigger unit can off set this however this will cost you more to run. I have a 36 Square house (28 living) i have a 15watt. But i have this designed with 2 return air. 3 zone motors. During the day I run the living area 100/120 sqaure meters. At night I can run the whole house. The unit can get the house down to about 24/25 degrees depending on the heat outside. When it was 38 the other day I actually had it set to 25 but i had no block out window coverings on at that time so I wonder how much lower it could have went. This was just the living area, it would have been a waste of time to cool the whole house under these conditions. I only started getting blinds this week so i am interested to see how much this helps. 24/25 is very cold when you have the aircond on and it is 35+ outside. Re: Brivis add on cooling quotes - is it a good price 7Feb 23, 2011 9:26 pm Hi BStar, Thank you for your feedback. We are still debating about the brivis add on cooling system. Trying to justify the cost versus evap cooling. My only reason for looking at referigerated cooling was because I was told by someone that evap cooling is no good for children with eczema. One of my daughters suffers from eczema pretty bad when it is flared up, so didn't want to compound the problem even more. But am having a hard time justifying the extra cost, which is coming to about ~3k. The guy did get back to me abt the cooling units, and he included the bigger unit as he thought I wanted to cool the whole house at the same time. I told him I was happy to take the smaller version which would mean zoned, so either bedrooms or living areas would be running at the same time. I am ok with that, but still is significant extra cost compared to gas ducted and evap cooling. Regards.
