Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 13, 2011 12:44 pm Hi Guys I got a double story house built and evaporative cooling unit installed. When I switch on evaporative cooling unit, should I: 1. Keep window or door opened in each room in upstairs and downstairs 2. Keep ONE window or door open in upstairs and downstairs 3. Keep ONE window or door open only in downstairs What is the best way? Thanks guys. Re: How to use Evaporative Cooling in an effective Way 2Jan 13, 2011 1:56 pm Depends where you want to cool. Whichever room you want to cool should have a window open so the cool air can flow through it and exhaust through the window. If there are rooms you don't particularly want to cool leave the windows closed and the door open and the cool air will flow out the door and to any open window. In any case you'll need more than one window open. Normal rule of thumb is that for every ceiling outlet you need windows/doors left open to outside equivalent to twice the area of each vent. Re: How to use Evaporative Cooling in an effective Way 3Jan 14, 2011 11:25 am Imagine filling your house with water (not a pun on our QLD friends) and opening a door or window - the water will naturally want to flow there - this is where the air will flow. All the cool air will naturally want to flow downstairs so no need to open anything upstairs unless a door is closed within the room. I would personally suggest a living area downstairs You get what you pay for! Re: How to use Evaporative Cooling in an effective Way 4Jan 21, 2011 12:07 pm Have a window open in every room that you are pumping air from the unit into to reduce the moisture/condensation build up even if you don't want that room cooled. If you have a zoned system that requires certain rooms to be on even though you aren't using them you will need to have some external ventilation Re: How to use Evaporative Cooling in an effective Way 5Jan 22, 2011 10:19 am It is very, very rare to zone an evaporative system as generally most damper motors to not have the torque to hold the volume and pressure of air from an evaporative cooler. If you open up too much of the house then a negative pressure is created and ultimately air from outside infiltrates inside - the opposite of what and how evaporative systems are meant to work. If you are in a room and have a door closed, then open the window in that room. If the door is open the air will ultimately want to go in that direction anyway. You are filling and emptying the volume of the entire house typically every 2 minutes, less in some cases. Condensation should not be an issue unless there is not enough area for the air to escape or on very high humidity days - rare even then. Typically around 2m2 is sufficient for an evaporative system - as a test put a piece of paper (A4) on the inside of a fly screen. As you open the door (not screen) more and more the paper will eventually want to slide down the screen a bit - this is about the ideal opening area for your system. Whether it is one door completely open or 2 doors 1/2 - 3/4 open - you will eventually work out what is best for you. You get what you pay for!
