Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 04, 2011 2:33 pm Hi I have brown rough bricks that get very hot in Perth in summer and absorb a lot of heat during the hot summer days and radiate that heat back into the house at night making my house very hot. i was wondering if rendering the outside walls with a light cream coloured cement render would make much difference in how much the house would heat up? it will cost a a couple of thousand dollars to have it rendered, or would it be better spent on buying a good air conditioner? thoughts? thanks, Pete Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 2Jan 04, 2011 3:09 pm It will make some difference but its hard to say how much. An alternative might be to put up a pergola on the North side and plant some bushes on the West side to maximise the time that wall is in the shade. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 3Jan 04, 2011 3:14 pm bashworth It will make some difference but its hard to say how much. I'll take that as "I have no friggin idea" Would you like to take an educated guess? I'm leaning to 10%??? I was hoping i could find some website that shows the different heat absorbing coefficients of different colours... that would help somewhat. An alternative might be to put up a pergola on the North side Not feasible in this case unfortunately Cheers, Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 4Jan 04, 2011 3:32 pm The answer depends on a lot of things like what render you use how shiny the surface is, what colour you use but I have seen people say 20% is achievable and the following link claims 30% http://www.solutionindustries.com.au/Pa ... nt-621.htm The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 5Jan 04, 2011 3:37 pm bashworth the following link claims 30% That's for snow white reflective paint, not "light cream coloured cement render" I understand it all depends on lots of things. Thanks, any more bids on 20%? Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 6Jan 04, 2011 9:20 pm Foil blocks > 99% of radiation and white paint blocks 50%. A study shows foil a 20% reduction in A/C running cost with foil. So I would expect that white render would be half as effective. Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 7Jan 04, 2011 10:49 pm hmmmm interesting... I think a 10% saving might be the go then... At the most. I think it's fair to say that rendering by itself may not be a cost effective means to reduce heat in a house. Bring on the split system! Thanks for that. Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 8Jan 04, 2011 11:32 pm Grow vegetation along the unshaded wall. Cheapest option. Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 9Jan 04, 2011 11:49 pm I actually thought of doing that a while back but it the drawbacks were, it'd take a long time to grow big/thick enough to cover the entire wall and i'd forever be having to prune it and stop it gettng into my roof and gutters. it's very 'romantic' but in practice i think it would take a lot of ongoing effort. but yes i'd seriously reconsider it if there was a wall cover that stopped growing when i wanted it too. and if i chose a slow growing vine it'd take years for it to cover my wall anyway! phew! thanks Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 11Jan 05, 2011 1:16 am I fart a lot! Ohhhhh you mean do i open up the windows and put the fans on, yes i do. but when we have 5 or more straight days of 40+ degree days and the nights are still 30+ degrees at 10pm with little to no breeze it tends to make it a tad uncomfortable. after a few days of scorching heat it's scary to feel the inside of my walls and feel the warmth coming off them. i actually love the heat, i really do but sometimes it just gets a bit much. I think i'd only really need to use the cooling side of my aircon for 30 days out of each year so i'm not too concerned about the running costs. I'm not one to have a cold house in summer, but i like not having to sweat while i'm sitting down doing nothing inside. I'm going to relook at the vegetation idea, and maybe look at painting my roof white-ish. but i think there's not going to be any escaping the fact that i need an aircon to beat mother nature when it gets a bit brutal. Re: Does rendering my outside walls make my house cooler? 12Jan 05, 2011 7:45 am It's important to ventialte all night. Also, depending on your construction, close the house up during the day. This would be the case for a full brick house and even more so if double glazed with no direct sunlight getting through. Tempting as it is open up a well insualtion and high thermal mass house during the day to catch the breeze, all you are doing is heating it up.
