Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: GDH with add on cooling or reverse cycle system. 2Jan 07, 2011 8:40 pm Malbaby, There are pro's and cons for both. Is it a budget or performance question. GDH is cheaper to run and often can heat your whole house at once or the latest systems can zone your home to have different temperatures in different zones and reduce operation to one zone reducing running costs (dare I say an inverter for DGH - modulating burner) GDH heating is less 'harsh' than refrigerated systems which dehumidify the air Ducted R/C should be zoned IMO as why would you want to condition the whole home unless you are using it all - rare I'd say. The one issue I have with GDH with add-on cooling is the duct sizing. I have been brought up in WA and trained in ducted R/C air conditioning. The last 5 years has found me in Melbourne where this type of system seems to primarily exist. Ultimately they tend to oversize the diameter of duct for the gas but undersize (in circumstances) the duct for R/C. Example: where a 150mm duct will be more than adequate for gas a 250mm may be required for R/C yet a 200mm is used. All my training cannot accept this yet it seems to pass VIC consumer standards (no or little complaints) Now Melbourne tends to rely on heating over cooling but I think 2 summers ago would argue that. I am a ducted R/C man but the heating aspect of gas appeals to me - personal choice I'd say. Initial outlay vs running costs vs expectations Any questions, feel free to post You get what you pay for! Re: GDH with add on cooling or reverse cycle system. 3Jan 10, 2011 12:31 pm Hi! I'll jump in here and ask when price IS an issue - it sounds like Reverse Cycle Split system/inverter systems might be the best bet? *I* am concerned more with AC (yard faces N NW and we'll have a large glass expanse over rear of building) but having said that it DOES get cold during winter. House is single story at front, elevated double at rear (sloping block). We have two main living zones upstairs and kids bedrooms downstairs. Approx Sq Mt of 460. Is there anyway for a solar array to defer some of the cost of running an AC? (cause we'd certainly prefer to spend more on solar array than AC/heating). I would appreciate any recommendations/ballpark figures. Thanks so much. (don't want much, do I? ) prin x - Planning to renovate/extend and add on. Dec 10 - Soil test & Bush fire report completed.
