Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 03, 2010 5:02 pm We are renovating a 1960's weatherboard cottage in Atherton, Nth Qld. Can anyone help with working out the best method to stop heat entering the house through the roof (galv iron sheets)? I am trying to work out the relative benefits and costs of reflective foil sheeting like Aircell installed under the roof and heat reflective paint such as Acratex. Would we need just one of these methods, or both? Thanks Re: Reflective roof paint vs ceiling insulation 2Oct 05, 2010 9:10 pm The main issue is solar radiant gain. Step 1 - RFL Step 2 - Install ceiling fans for evaporative cooling Step 3 - Paint roof white (much better than coloured heat reflective paint and only slightly worse but far cheaper than white heat reflective paint) Step 4 - Ventilate the inside of the house (not roof space) when it gets cooler in the evening Step 5 - Put in batts (if you are using air conditioning or winter gets cold) but note that it can stop the house cooling down if you have inadequate ventilation. see the Your Home technical manual on Passive cooling Re: Reflective roof paint vs ceiling insulation 3Oct 06, 2010 1:04 pm Thanks dymonite, appreciate your help. I am reluctant to paint the roof white as the Atherton climate has months of drizzle, and all the white roofs look very mouldy and ugly in a fairly short time. That is why I'm looking at the acra-tex sort of coating for the roof - but as you point out its pretty expensive. Do you know whether its more or less effective in blocking heat from entering the house than RFL? Would the cost of installing both RFL and acratex be worth it in terms of keeping the house cool, or should we just choose one product? You mentioned in another post that insulation is a law of diminishing returns - is this the case here? Re: Reflective roof paint vs ceiling insulation 4Oct 06, 2010 3:31 pm RFL is far more effective than a white roof. A white roof has additional benefit if you also want to keep the roof space cooler as well (e.g. occupied or using it for A/C duct work). If cost is an issue RFL is enough. Found the answer.
