I am building a new house - should we have ceiling fans or not. if yes then only in bedrooms or in living areas as well. I have been using ceiling fans in my current house and we use ceiling fans all the summer but presently we don't have evaporative air con. My builder is supplying evaporative air con now. but i am confused whether i should still go for ceiling fans or not???? opinion please........... Re: ceiling fans in Perth??? 2Sep 24, 2010 8:35 pm we had ceiling fans in our lounge room and main bedroom in perth with evaporative air con. we didn't put ceiling fans in the minor bedrooms because of the ages of our children. ( I was worried about them swinging on them or throwing things into them) when it gets humid in Perth and the evap doesn't do enough the ceiling fans are wonderful. I'd do it for sure. I concur, definately in the master ( and Im going recycled air this time) its a soothing white noise to sleep by, plus Im gonna put one in the alfresco. We have refridgerative aircon this time and towards the end of our first summer we got ceiling fans in all bedrooms and the main living area. ( yes our kids are older now) This summer we'll get to properly test them out. I do find the ceiling fan a soothing "white noise" like Echo said. Last night Dh felt cold and put the heating on for an hour or so as it's not been cold enough for the woodfire and DS2 who rarely feels the cold obviously wasn't happy about it as Dh must have put his bedroom zone n as well. I woke up this morning and discovered his ceiling fan was on full pelt. Re: ceiling fans in Perth??? 5Sep 25, 2010 11:05 am CC101 just want to have opinion in regards to ceiling fans in perth. IMO you'd be better off upgrading to reverse cycle than spending money on fans. Evaporatives IMO are just not effective enough. Re: ceiling fans in Perth??? 7Sep 25, 2010 2:40 pm huggy_B I honestly think evap can work in perth. BUT it depends on where you are. we were within 5 kms of the coast in Joondalup. The evap worked more than 95-97% of the time perhaps more without any dramas. For the small amount of time he same time. I would have preferred to get evap for our current house but advice from locals that where we now live gets more consistently humid summers than Perth meant it wasn't a good choice. They've been proven correct. It is very humid here in summer. If I was building inland from the coast in Perth I think I'd also be tempted to advise refrigeration style air con if you could afford it especially if I was in the situation we were in where there wasn't an alternative heating form that could heat the entire house efficiently and cost effectively. Luckily for us we have been able to get our hands on a wood heater for the main living area and this gets used as our main heating tool for the living area. CC101 have you experienced the wall units before? I am not a fan of them ( no pun intended) I find the sound they make unpleasant. However if they don't bother you they can be a much more cost effective solution for heating and cooling than ducted refridg.. Re: ceiling fans in Perth??? 8Sep 25, 2010 9:29 pm thanx kexkez - yes i have been using fujitsu reverse cycle wall unit. the sound never bothered me. In fact sometimes i don't even notice if it is on or not. so that is for sure that those units for master and kids bedroom - that is very cost effective in winter. Re: ceiling fans in Perth??? 9Sep 27, 2011 6:19 pm I was considering fans for my house in Sydney and bumped into a bit of research by RMIT on the impact of ceiling fans on Energy Star ratings and energy saving. It is hard to summarise so here is a link: http://www.spinifexfans.com.au/resource ... ar-ratings. The same site also showed some research by the CSIRO that claimed that using ceiling fans with air conditioning allowed you to increase the thermostat temperature by 2-3 degrees for the same cooling effect - http://www.spinifexfans.com.au/resource ... iling-fans. My take away was that in most Australian cities ceiling fans make a pretty big difference and are worth the effort if you can find something you like.
