Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 24, 2010 11:14 am Good Morning I'm soon to be building and my package includes free ducted air. I'm in Queensland so things get warm in summer. My question is, as I'm looking at electricals, should I put ceiling fans through the house as well as the ducted air? The thought being that sometimes it's nice to have some air moment without having to switch on 10,000 watts of cooling I guess pros: Could save on energy, offers another step between no cooling and air-con. I guess cons: Ceiling doesn't look as 'clean', costs more to install ceiling fans. What are your thoughts? Do I install fans in the house (as well as aircon), or just leave the ducted air-con to do it's work? Building at Warner Lakes in sunny Queensland. Building with Bold Properties. Our builder provides for two ceiling fans, I think they have to, something about energy efficiency regs? Anyway, we intend having more put in after handover. We were told to get a batten fix light where we would want the fan and then apparently its easy for the electrician to install a fan there. I think it will be cheaper to have done later and also more choice. I will be looking for ones with a timer for the bedrooms. I agree with you that it should save energy- we were told it costs about 1c per hour to run a ceiling fan. Also I don't like to have air con running all night - unlike my DH who would have us living in arctic conditions! I think you can get ones that are a bit more sleek looking nowadays but I think the comfort factor outweighs the look of the ceiling. Re: Ducted Air - Fans or not fans?? 3Sep 24, 2010 11:37 am Agreed, I like it quite cool in the summer so will have the air-con but we are adding the fans to bedrooms and the main living areea just so that it delays when you have to turn on the A/C as well as just having the air moving in the bedrooms after you've cooled for a few hours before bedtime. Have a look at the Fanaway fans. The blades retract when it's not running and turns into a pendant light. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Ducted Air - Fans or not fans?? 7Sep 24, 2010 12:39 pm Looks like fans are a winner. I was thinking one of the following options: A) Fans to all bedrooms, plus living areas and patio. B) Fans to all bedrooms, and patio, but not living areas. Any comments on those? Also what do you think about the media room? Building at Warner Lakes in sunny Queensland. Building with Bold Properties. We put in fans in all the bedrooms, rumpus and alfresco. Thinking about getting one in the upstairs lounge as well. It's well worth doing. Also what do you think about the media room? We have gone option B - fans just for bedrooms, kids playroom and alfresco & cabana - I personally don't like the look of them in living areas/media rooms. Re: Ducted Air - Fans or not fans?? 12Sep 24, 2010 4:15 pm We almost put fans into our plan, but then realised that we were walking through all of the displays throughout the heat of summer, and thought the aircon did a good enough job. I like the movement of air, but we have westerly windows and figured the Freo Doctor (perth arvo wind) would be good enough. Maybe in QLD you need the movement of air, I know dealing with humidity is different than dealing with awesome Perth summer desert heat. I'm having fans in every room, including the media room. Actually, the only room I'm not putting one in is the kitchen ... unless I can find a nice small 'kitchen' ceiling fan ... then even that room will have one too. ETA: Plus we are facing the house to try and catch the ocean breezes through the living areas as well. Might be overkill ... but I can't stand it when it's so still, I like feeling the air moving around in summer. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
