Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 29, 2010 1:57 pm Does anyone know the best way to clean the ash from a wood heater? It's similar to a coonara, with a glass door at the front. I've tried scooping it out, but the dust goes everywhere. Could I vacuum them out (when cold of course ) with an old vacuum cleaner? Thanks eimaj Re: Cleaning ashes from wood heater? 2Jul 29, 2010 4:22 pm We have had wood heaters in the past and I had no problems scooping the ash out with the shovel that comes in the accessories sets that you can buy for them. The ash can't be allowed to build up too much or you'll have more of an issue with dust-having said that, with our last wood heater I only had to empty it once or twice a winter because it was a triple burn system.....the ash is good for the garden too! The worry about vacuuming it out is that there may be embers hidden under the ash which could start a fire in the vacuum cleaner. Its normal to carefully scoop out out, into a bucket and take it outside. You would need to make sure there is no breese blowing around as you do it though, so the ahes are not blown around the place. Doing this just before your regular general vacuuming would be a good time, so you can vac up anything that spills. The suggestion of vacuuming is potentially problematic. Certainly you must be absolutely certain that its fully cooled before even thinking about using a vacuum. But nearly all vacuum cleaners will become choked up very quickly with the fine ash, so is really not a good idea. There are industrial type vacuums with special features designed for vacuuming high levels of fine dust/plaster/etc. Would probably cost at least $2k. Is it worth it? So its back to the scoop & bucket! Don't do it in your best white blouse, and perhaps use a P2 face mask while doing it. Ash.
