Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 30, 2010 6:51 pm Hi All, We have been living in a small single story house in Sydney for a number of years. The house does not have a roof cavity due to cathedral ceilings, and it is set on piers, aprox 60 cm high. The house is forty years old. We have wooden floorboards throughout. No insulation. The house gets very hot in summer and cold in winter. We also get alot of condensation near the front of the house, resulting in dampness throughout. We have to place/replace hippos and other moisture absorbers in the house every few months. We would like to investigate our options for insulation but not sure where to start. Obviously the insulation would have to be installed underfloor and/or inter-wall. Any suggestions? The variations in temperature are driving us crazy! Thanks Re: Insulation options for house with no roof cavity 2May 30, 2010 8:27 pm In terms of hot in summer and condensation, you can get whirly gigs for cathedral roofs (looks like a ceiling vent insire but then connected to whilry gig outside. Can't remember the company but was a pretty well known one. That would help vent the hot air in summer and also help to remove condensation in the winter. I would suggest a few of those. They are also closable (electronically or with a broom) which means that if it gets too cold in winter, then you close them. Also, have you considered installing some ceiling fans. When in the reverse spin, they can be effective in drawing all the warm air that collects in the cathedral ceiling down to the living area level during winter and use hardly any power to do so. In terms of insulation, not sure what you could do unless you wanted to take off the roof and put down a reflective sarking to reflect away heat. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. A waffle pod slab does not go with maple syrup. The other thing I could imagine is to take the roof material off if it's corrugated iron, insulate between the joists and put the roof on once again, but beware of any leeks and or condensation problems. Under the floor this is easier you can do (suffer) the job yourself. Re: Insulation options for house with no roof cavity 4Jun 27, 2010 6:04 pm There is a really good spray foam insulation that aim at cathedral style ceilings called Icynene, the importer for australia is www.envirohealth.net.au and a installer that seems to do most areas is www.sprayinsulation.net.au this spray foam insulation is used alot in the US and does not grow mould and comes with a life time guarantee Firstly, if your house is still under builder's warranty (10 years in Victoria) you should have no need to crawl into roof space but let the builder handle it, unless you… 3 5640 Hey guys, what’s everyone opinion on James Hardie linea direct fix to frame?
