Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 May 28, 2010 3:11 pm Hi, I had an extension done some time ago with a plaster cathedral ceiling below a tiled roof and have I just discovered that there is only a foil sarking insulation between the plaster and the tiles - no bulk insulation. Am I correct in thinking that the insulation in my extension roof does not meet the Victorian standards introduced in 1991 ? (I'm in Melbourne) Re: Ceiling Insulation Standards 2May 29, 2010 6:35 pm It is generally accepted that ceiling insulation is fire-resistant to a degree. However, there have been many reported instances of fire being causes even when such resistant insulation is installed too close to electrical equipment and devices. Subsequently, fire officials suggest that there should be a minimum distance of clearance between insulation and certain items, such as 50 mm around incandescent lamps (standard household light bulb) and 200 mm around halogen lamps. Re: Ceiling Insulation Standards 3May 30, 2010 1:28 pm Thanks for the response mustaq. I have halogen lights, and there certainly isn't 200mm clearance, however that was thinking about the thermal insulation standards when I asked my question. I thought a pitched roof with cathedral ceiling should have R2.5 insualtion in Melbourne (according to the 1991 Vic standards), which I do not believe foil insulation provides. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? Found the answer. The recommended distance is .... 1 5958 Building Standards; Getting It Right! Don't think they are designed for double brick. WA has a particular way of building and unfortunately that's the way a large amount of sills are finished. 3 6997 I believe this is correct. From the picture you can see the power was put in last so the electrician knew where the water was. Really it's a common sense issue more… 4 5148 |
