Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 29, 2010 5:23 pm Hi all, was chatting to a friend about air con options and she told me in her old house she had one wall unit and simply turned on the 'fan only' mode on her ducted heating and had cool air all around the home through her ducts! Sounds like an economical solution to my refrigerated air dilema. Only thing was she warned me that it was essential to buy a unit large enough to cover the house. Anyone done this before and what size unit would be appropriate for 25 square home? Please share your opinions. Stuey. Re: Anyone tried this with A/C wall unit? 2Mar 29, 2010 8:18 pm It is not a conventional means of using the the AC fan.
There are two reasons I can see why this might work. 1) The fan is creating enough air movement to encourage evaporation of human perspiration and aid cooling. 2) The fan is blowing out hot air out of the house and drawing in cooler outside air. 1) works if the fan motor is big enough and you aren't trying to cool to move the air around in too many rooms at once. 2) works if the outside air is cooler than inside. It would probably be more effective to invest in some ceiling fans. For it to remotely work you need to have the single aircond right near the return air. It works but doesnt work that well. You will only notice a improvement if your house windows are well covered and no sun makes it into the house on a hot day. Re: Anyone tried this with A/C wall unit? 4Apr 03, 2010 9:10 pm I have tinkered with this idea over the last 2 summers. 2 x splits located at either end of the house, hallway in between. Heater's Air intake in the middle. Had to get up in the roof b/c my heater had no fan only mode from the wall switch, so i just powered the fan separately. In short, it helped lower the overall temp, but had little real effect. Can't hurt to test your theory if you can be bothered, just don't expect alot unless the AC will be very close to the heater air intake, per Borg's point. Plans Done Feb 2010 Permit Done 23 April. Re: Anyone tried this with A/C wall unit? 6Apr 07, 2010 12:30 am Cold air typically pools so if the house is single level a single head unit will cool it reasonably well so long as it points at the hallway and is not a mini McMansion. It takes longer to cool around 360 degree turns but it still does, using it here in a such a manner and even with 2 powerful computers running in the room it still manages to cool it well. If your house is larger ceiling fans can make a considerable cost saving. Multi head units become more efficient after a point but 3000watts for a small house is overkill. I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe. S o I… 0 36944 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5196 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16157 |
