Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Mar 06, 2010 8:19 pm What ceiling fans are required? Look there are stacks of fans on the market, some have 4 blades, some have 3. Some hang close to the ceiling, others don't. Some have wall mounted controls and others have remote. Some are small, some are large. How the hell do I work out what fan type the room needs? Re: Ceiling fans 2Mar 06, 2010 8:59 pm My understanding is the blade length is more important than blade number. Longer blades move more air for a given rpm and as a result are less noisier. Note how efficient wind farm turbines are with only 3 long blades. A reasonable gap should be between the fan and ceiling to allow smooth air flow. I have read that one foot minimum is recommended. There are various blade designs to try to improve air flow for a given energy input. In my research I found these ones but unfortunately locate them in Australia. They claim to be twice as efficient due to blade design. It doesn't seem to be problem for us unless if they a going full bore. Some fans have 'winter' settings to reverse blade movement to move air upward rather than producing an uncomfortable breeze. Note that noticeable air movement drops off quite rapidly beyond the perimeter of the blade tip. Re: Ceiling fans 3Jul 26, 2010 6:39 pm I concur completely with all that dymonite69 wrote in this thread. Numbers of blades is far less important than the other factors listed so thoroughly in that post. If "performance" were the only consideration then our choices would be a lot easier. Other factors like "Appearance" & "Price" are strong determiners for choosing a fan and "Performance" unfortunately becomes important after the "good looking, cheap" fan doesn't meet the purchaser's performance expectations. As in most product selections when considering Performance, Appearance & Price - there is a trade off. If a low price is the major consideration then something else is going to give way. In choosing a good fan: 1. ask about a reputable brand 2. find a design in that brand that appeals to you 3. ask about its performance characteristics 4. shop it around to get the best price Hi, We're building with a volume builder, and added provisions for ceiling fans.
