It's also a good idea to check gaps around doors and windows and block them (with door socks or similar) to stop the cold coming in and the heat escaping. Now if you're trying to keep the house cool in summer then it's a good idea to try and diffuse as much of the direct sunlight as you can before it's hitting those windows. You can try exterior block-outs, shade cloth blinds, or even screens. Another option, depending on you home is to plant some vegetation in front of the window which will provide some natural shade. The front of our house faces west, with two large windows 2.4w x 1.8h and we have opted for block-out holland blinds inside, with shade cloth blinds outside screening the front patio which works a treat! Good luck Re: Room with large windows. 3Jan 09, 2010 3:18 pm IkonInteriors good quality blinds, or curtains (in a thick heavy material). like clothing, it is better to have several layers (lined and possibly interlined) to trap the air in between, than one thick layer. Re: Room with large windows. 4Jan 09, 2010 3:31 pm Which way does it face and what's outside? We've got a roller shutter on our big west facing window, it seemed to be the most effective thing there. On the north we've planted deciduous trees as during summer the sun doesn't shine directly in the windows anyway, so we're trying to reduce glare and make the area outside the windows cooler. Re: Room with large windows. 5Jan 11, 2010 7:31 pm The room faces south-ish. Yeah so far i think my best option will to be install a folding arm awning. I realise these aren't meant to be left up when out of the house but we also plan to have a deck and the shade will prove very useful.
