Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jan 06, 2010 10:17 pm Hi I have started to line my shed to make it more comfortable to work in. My daughter has been helping me and we are very new to this type of work. I would like to have it confirmed that we have placed the sisalation around the right way. We have placed the silver side against the outside of the shed with the blue side showing inside. Is this correct? Thanks Re: which way does sisalation need to go when lining a shed? 2Jan 07, 2010 12:22 am My limited understanding is that the blue side is an "antiglare" coating that is added to prevent the installers from having their retinas seared when putting sisalation on a roof, especially on a sunny day. The stuff would be more effective as a heat reflector without it and I believe it can be ordered silver both sides. So, I think the way you have described (silver side out) is not what's usually done but probably works better in keeping heat out. BTW, if you use this stuff as roof insulation, be sure to "drape" it so it hangs 40mm or so under the roofing material between the purlins......ie don't pull it taut. Draping it creates an airspace between the roof and the sarking (sisalation is only one brand) and this greatly increases the insulating performance. I asked for this in our house and didn't find out until it was too late that they didn't comply.....most roofers don't seem to have any idea about things like this. It is true that the shiny side reflects the infra-red radiation. But it also true that infra-red radiation can't escape from the shiny side when the back of the material gets heated up. Look up reflectivity, absorptivity and emissivity to understand how radiant barriers work. Is an air gap between the breather and insulation what you mean?
