Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 30, 2009 12:09 pm Hey guys, We are going to go and put our own insulation in the internal walls before the builder does the gyprocking. I have been looking at the Bradford website http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Products/Residential/Acoustic-insulation.aspx and they have Sound Insulation for Internal walls ( I would probally get the R 2.5) http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Products/Residential/Acoustic-insulation/SoundScreen-Plus-internal.aspx and Gold Insulation that goes to r 2.0 for internal walls. Which one is better? or are they much the same? Price difference is about $15 a pack. Re: Difference between Sound Insulation and Normal Insulation 3Dec 01, 2009 6:41 pm I had Bradford soundscreen installed in the walls of my home theatre room in my old house which my wife and I just sold and it made a noticeable difference in blocking out sound (and keeping sound in the room) as opposed to regular insulation. It also provided superior thermal insulation due to its density. Re: Difference between Sound Insulation and Normal Insulation 4Dec 01, 2009 9:26 pm Yes - I just spent two hours and $880 putting sound insulation in the internal walls of the house It was as easy as everybody says it is Re: Difference between Sound Insulation and Normal Insulation 5Dec 05, 2009 11:01 pm netadelle Hey guys, We are going to go and put our own insulation in the internal walls before the builder does the gyprocking. Which one is better? or are they much the same? Price difference is about $15 a pack. They aren't the same, SoundScreens are like a stiff boards, they are very dense, the other stuff is like yellow or pink fairy floss. SoundScreen batts are easier to install, you just cut and jam them in between the framing. SoundScreen and siimilar batts make a difference but sound only needs one easy avenue, no matter how small it is, and it'll get through. In our case most of the downstairs rooms are open, the sound just shoots straight up the stair well and and you can hear every pin drop. The TV room is an exception, it has sliding doors, if you shut them and crank the TV up very loud then go up stairs into the bed room directly above the TV you can barely hear anything at all. It is amazing, SoundScreen really does work BUT as I say if the sound has another avenue it will easily get through and be heard loud and clear. The insulation can be bypassed completely! A lot of sound gets through the doors and under the doors as well, I'm tempted to put heavier doors in my home office, but I've got too many other ways to spend money at the moment ;-| I'm not sure what your goals are but if you want sound proofing then yes Sound batts make a difference but you must consider absolutely everything else as well. Re: Difference between Sound Insulation and Normal Insulation 7Jan 13, 2010 8:02 pm A noticeable difference between sound installation batts and thermal insulation is their relative density. Thermal insulation is created with gazillions of air pockets in the batts. So a good thermal batt is one that is very thick (more air pockets) and light (air again). However a good acoustic batt is one that creates sound attenuation with mass. So the sound insulation batt will be heavier and more rigid. (oh, and will cost more). The better sound insulation batts are Rockwool (CSR Bradford - #2 insulation company in Aust) and Fletcher Insulation's (#1 Insulation Co) Pink Batts Silencer and Pink Sonobatts. Hope that helps.
