Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Nov 05, 2009 10:50 pm am thinking of putting in a split system air conditioning in my living room and the master bedroom.. i have not yet started building and want to ask: - is it any cheaper if I have my builder install it for me? of course, i will choose the system (thinking of Panasonic or Fujitsu) - if i decided to install it after the build, what do i need to take into account for in terms or electrical wiring and plumbing? i mean what do I need to tell the builder to put as provision for the system? - let's say i forgot all about it, how much does it usually cost to install it? i mean labor cost. thanks.. MyHomeoneThread Our Oxford22 Blog Re: split sytem air conditioning - install during or after build 2Nov 06, 2009 7:10 am They are very easy to install after the build. I haven't heard of people doing them during the build, unless it's a ducted split system. Do you know anyone who will do a cashy for you? If you have a friend who is an electrician they may know an airconditioning guy interested in doing a weekend cash job.....? Friends of friends are how we have sourced a lot of our additional stuff so far. If you do then you should only need to pay a few hundred (after paying for the actual unit of course). Re: split sytem air conditioning - install during or after build 3Nov 06, 2009 10:54 am We had three splits installed after the build, however the sparky pre-wired them for us (or so they said) We wanted it pre-wired so that we didn't have to have the metal piping down the edge of the house. Well, for a start it was a hassle to get the men out to finish what they started after handover, and then to make matters worse, for some reason we still have piping there. I believe we were dodged. (Hubby is just too nice, after all- he's a pushover) It took around three months after handover (which was Nov 29 - so we went through summer with splits sitting in our garage waiting to be installed GRR!) to get the job completed. I would honestly get a heating and cooling person just do the whole thing, but book it now so that it's not a pain to get it organised after handover. Convenience is worth all the money in the world to me! I would never advise a cash job again after the crap I had to go through to get mine finished up. And in the end, it still cost us more... it was $650 for the pre-wire (which would have taken 2 minutes, really - just wire through frame!) and then installation was around $850 each one! And we had pre-purchased the splits TO SAVE MONEY!! Never again. Now with the new house we're building, we're just getting refrigerated air con. Re: split sytem air conditioning - install during or after build 4Nov 06, 2009 6:17 pm thanks for the replies.. i guess i will be installing it after the build then... is there anything that i need to have my builder put in my electrical plan or plumbing to accommodate the split system A/C ? just afraid that the A/C installer will have to do a big job just to install new wirings and circuits... thanks. MyHomeoneThread Our Oxford22 Blog Re: split sytem air conditioning - install during or after build 5Nov 06, 2009 8:47 pm We are having ours partially done before the plaster goes on. The good thing about doing it this way is that we can easily have the split system on any wall, instead of being restricted to external walls (and without piping showing) - our new family room will only have one external wall which is above the 2400 high bifolds, so not enough room for a split.
