Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 31, 2009 8:10 pm Hi, We are doing a large extension at the moment and are putting in a second ducted heating unit to service the new part of the house (we have pretty much doubled the size of the house and our exisiting ducted heating is only 4 years old, so too good to just pull out). My question is whether it is better to have it installed in the floor or ceiling? My original preference was to have it through the floor, the same as we have with our other unit - better for drying washing for starters. We have had many communication issues with our builder and one of these was to give me a days notice of having the ducts done before they laid the flooring down This obviously couldn't happen and since then it has rained a lot and there is a lot of water underneath the house. My BIL will be doing the installation and has suggested we install the heating in the ceiling instead to get around the water issue, and because the under house access is terrible and has been very poorly planned by the builders (there are several pipes in the way so it is almost impossible to get under there at all). I am just a bit worried that the heating won't be as efficient in the ceiling - does anyone have some advice? It is a brick home, tiled roof with 9ft ceilings. Oh, we are in the process of getting agi drains put in, but I don't think that will do anything about the water we already have pooled under the house - just stopping more getting under there. Thanks in advance Re: Gas ducted heating through floor or ceiling? 2Nov 02, 2009 12:53 pm We've lived in houses with both floor and ceiling outlet ducted heating. Both work better if you have ceiling fans set for winter direction rotation. I find that the ceiling outlet heating results in more noticeable pockets of hot air than the floor outlet, but that might just be that the ceiling outlets weren't well designed. It was easier to adjust the floor outlets, and they were better for drying washing. We're lazy and tend to dry all our washing indoors apart from the big bedclothes washing days, so that is a bonus. That's probably more important because we don't have a clothes dryer. See, I am environmentally responsible! Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! Re: Gas ducted heating through floor or ceiling? 3Nov 04, 2009 1:35 pm Thanks for your reply Fiffaro I am waiting for the supervisor to get back to me on changing the sub floor access - I am hoping we can move it so that we can get heating under the floor as originally planned. We don't have fans, do you think the heating in the roof will be a lot worse without them? I am worried that the higher ceilings will make the heat not as effective. What about in the bathroom? I love that our current floor duct is right under the towel rail so the towels are nice and toasty - would the exhaust fan just suck the heat back out again if it was on? Re: Gas ducted heating through floor or ceiling? 4Nov 12, 2009 5:49 pm Having lived in both - floor and ceiling ducted heating, I would definately go for the floor - it is wonderful for putting clothes over and after coming home from work and it is really cold outside, nice to stand over too. Numerous friends have also had the ceiling ducted and they also complain that it is just not warm enough. Plus just remember - hot air rises!!! They make the room much easier to clean for one, reflect more light (if light colour tiles are used), and you dont end up with dust on the top edge of tiles (cause most… 3 9578 yep sounds good make the footing bigger to to allow for the pipe in the middle 3 7298 Hi When it rains in a particular direction water comes through the security door.
