Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 28, 2009 10:10 pm Hi, Just after some info from anyone who has installed ducted evap cooling in a double story house.... How many ducts do you have (size of house too)? Where are they located? How efficient is the cooling (upstairs and downstairs)? The reason I am asking is beacause our builder thinks evap cooling wont work very well in our house (29sq double story). They said it's rare to have evap in a double story (I disagree)and are pushing for us to go refrigerated (@ around $17k!!!). We have stuck to our guns and they will put in evap but only 4 points upstairs (3 bedrooms and rumpus - which is fine) and 2 points downstairs (open plan area) We would like at least one more point downstairs, 2 more would be even better but they say that the more points we add the less efficient it will be. We will have no cooling points in our formal lounge or study which concerns me. Opinions?....... Re: Ducted Evap cooling for double story house 2Oct 29, 2009 1:41 pm I'm interested in this as well since I'm currently building a 29 sq double story and I'm trying to figure out my air con solution. More so because part of the roof is only a 3 degree skilion, and the rest is only 8 degree skilion (sloped colorbond roof). Re: Ducted Evap cooling for double story house 3Dec 12, 2009 7:03 am I am building a 21sq townhouse and we are only getting evaporative cooling upstairs... i don't know why they have done it that way as I would have liked to have had at least 2 points downstairs. I asked the question and the builder seems to think we don't need it... So there is 1 point in each upstairs bedroom and then one in the hallway upstairs just as your about to walk downstairs. Perhaps it's more of a "builder trying to save money" thing is what I think?? Perhaps it's more of a "builder trying to save money" thing is what I think?? Yeah, sounds a bit like it. Maybe they missed their chance to install the ducts to the downstairs or didn't have space for em since you can't put ducts in the bottom floor afterwards :/. The good thing with evap atleast is that you can open the windows downstairs and the air will flow right through. And if you have tiles, your downstairs will stay pretty cool anyway. Re: Ducted Evap cooling for double story house 5Dec 13, 2009 12:51 pm I have evap in a 2 storey and no vents downstairs - Because you need to open windows or doors to allow the air to escape, the trick with a 2 storey house is to the close upstairs windows etc and the cold air naturally falls down the stairs and cools the downstaris section and you open the desired windows/doors that you want the air to flow out through. Can't see any reason why it won't work for you - lots of commercial buildings are only evap cooled and they are bigger than a house.
