Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 27, 2009 10:43 am My house is a 1920s weatherboard. It gets insanely hot in the summer.. Thermostat in the kitchen seems to only go up to 36 - and I'm sure that last summer it got above that (inside) on a number of occasions. The house is not large... block of 234sqm and the house takes up 2/3 of it. Am pretty sure that there's little/no insulation in the walls.. am not sure I can do anything about this short of ripping off all weatherboards and starting again... which seems an impractical option. We put up a new roof a couple of years ago, so our insulation up there is now up to scratch. So now we come to the key point... cooling. We have a split system in the loungeroom (an enclosed room).. It offers some relief on the hot days - but we're looking for a solution for the whole house which is very much NOT open plan. I understand the basic differences between evaporative and refridgerative - so no need to re-hash that here.. I like the idea of evaporative.. Cheaper to install and run... and being in Melbourne I don't need to worry about humidity so much.. The thing is.. I have no way of judging how effective evaporative will be for my house given all I've described about the house above. Last thing I want to do is to install evaporative only to find out it's useless on the hot days given the overall lack of insulation in the house. What to do? I'd appreciate any feedback from those with older style houses.. Re: Aircon for an old house 2Oct 28, 2009 8:50 pm We also live in Melbourne and have a house built in 1899 and have evaporative cooling installed and it is great. We don't have insulation in our walls but we have good insulation in the ceiling and DH recently spent two weekends under the house installing insulation there as well which has made a small but not insignificant difference. We have been very happy with the aircon.
