Re: Solar Roof Fan or Standard Whirlibird ? 3Oct 25, 2009 9:45 am I would paint your roof white or staple foil under the roof. Re: Solar Roof Fan or Standard Whirlibird ? 7Oct 25, 2009 1:04 pm Okay, no worries, I see you've been discussing insulation elsewhere, and whether whirlybird type products give you any benefits has been debated at length. I just thought no point discussing the finer details of various products if it turns out your roof doesn't even have insulation. FYI ... roof has insulation but only R2.5 so i was thinking of upgrading that as well if that helps..but i think i need some sort of ventilation as heat really gets trapped inside..any suggestions ? Re: Solar Roof Fan or Standard Whirlibird ? 9Oct 25, 2009 2:54 pm Like I said, the benefit of having those things has been debated at length. I have read in a few places that they really only make a significant difference if you have a raked ceiling and have them drawing hot air out of the top of the room, not the roof space, and I am inclined to agree with that. namz Mine is medium size house and gets hot very quickly as sun comes out..infact sometime its cooler outside than inside ... Have you looked at your window situation... orientation, shading...? Re: Solar Roof Fan or Standard Whirlibird ? 10Oct 26, 2009 10:25 am I would go for a roof fan. Whirlybirds work at the wrong times. A few good products are the solar star (get the 240v product with a thermostat) or look at solar breeze or solar venti. You only want the thing to be venting when it is hot (ie summer) not winter. Re: Solar Roof Fan or Standard Whirlibird ? 11Oct 26, 2009 10:30 am lambchoppa I would go for a roof fan. Removing it from the roof space itself won't be adequate. I would still use a radiant barrier for the roof to block heat in the first place.
