Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Oct 04, 2009 11:04 am I am just wondering how many of you and if so why, installed EXTRA insulation that was over and above wha the builder has supllied. We about to accept a quote for extra insulation to be installed in our 42sq house (INCLUDING garage). The builder will supply external wall insulation included in the package. We want to install it in all internal walls and sub floor insulation between ground and first floor for noise reduction. (In the dsiplay homes you can hear everything when the kiddies are upstairs so we thought it would be a good idea). Our quote for the EXTRA insulation is about $4,500. Are we doing too much, is it necessary? WHat do you think and what did you do? We are not able to install it ourselves (builders rules). www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: EXTRA insulation over and above what is supplied by builder? 2Oct 04, 2009 2:39 pm We upgraded our external walls from the builders standard 1.5 to 2.5 we upgraded our roof insulation from the builders standard 3 to 4.5. We are putting sound insulation in the internal walls around the home theatre. We where quoted $2500 to do sound insulation to all the internal walls. So we swapped to just the one room. I am hoping that when the put the insulation in I can talk to the traderperson doing it and come up with something like I bring him the extra sound insulation and he installs it for a small price. I think the builders quote was roughly $75 /sqm I know that I can buy the insulation from bunnings for $45/sqm. So will see what he wants to charge and either split the difference, or sneak on onste and do it myself. Re: EXTRA insulation over and above what is supplied by builder? 3Oct 04, 2009 4:06 pm Hi the Max, We waited for the energy report to come back and did not have to upgrade PD did that for us - we now have R4.0 in ceiling and sisalation and R1.5 in walls. Spoke to someone at the Building commission who said this was good and to put more in the ceiling if you could as heat travels upwards. In regards to sound insulation I think we are going to attempt it ourselves - I was at Bunnings this morning and it had bags for $31 for 5 sqm and a friend installed his in his house yesterday cost him $150 and was quoted by the builder $880, said it was really easy - especially if you use a serrated edge kitchen knife to cut it. I think builders rules and what happens on sites is very different. From what I have read it depends on how well you get on with your SS! We also added wall insulation and some sound batts. Definitely worth it IMO. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new.
