Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Sep 17, 2009 10:10 pm We can upgrade from our evaporative cooling to refrigerated air con for $2,700. Everyone I've spoken to said we should do it. Only thingh I'm worried about is the cost to run it, although seeing as though all houses need to be 5 star energy rated these days, probaly won't need to use it that often. Wondering what people think? Re: Refrigerated Air Con 2Sep 17, 2009 10:31 pm For that price I would do it. Can you find out what star rating it has? I think you have to do what is necessary to be comfortable but also try to use these things conservatively Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Refrigerated Air Con 4Sep 17, 2009 11:45 pm Upgrade, I dont know where you live, but in Adelaide you need refrigerated to cope with the 10 days over 40 degrees. Re: Refrigerated Air Con 5Sep 18, 2009 8:21 am Moonos21 Says "Upgrade to Refrigerative Air Conditioning (11.3kw - Single Phase Power)" Not sure of the rating but has to be at least 5 star I imagine. Think we'll keep it for sure The air con unit itself does not have to be 5 star rated, the house has to be. That sounds rather cheap for refrigerated air con - is it ducted? One of the systems was Lennox - not sure of the other one Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: Refrigerated Air Con 7Sep 18, 2009 9:09 am The refrigerated a/c systems cost about 4-5 times as much to run than an evaporative so its worth factoring in running costs, though as someone mentioned they can struggle a bit with really hot weather and won't really work in humid weather. We live in Adelaide and are just installing an evaporative but we also think we have a pretty good house design which should naturally cope pretty well with the really hot periods. The house we're currently in has a ducted evaporative which is really cheap to run, but there is also a very small r/c a/c system that only does a couple of rooms which we use when we get a long stretch of really really hot weather, and even then its only needed for a few hours a day as most of the time the evaporative is sufficient. Re: Refrigerated Air Con 8Sep 18, 2009 9:33 am When we build our 4th house sometime next year we are putting in evaporative A/C and later possibly adding a reverse cycle A/C to family/meals/kitchen area only. We had evap in our previous house and it was really good except on humid days. It was especially good when you had cooler air outside after a hot day to just blow out the hot air from inside the house. Our present house has refrigerated A/C throughout which is great but if it cools off outside you still have to keep it running because the inside doesn't cool down quick enough. Running costs are also a major factor. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. I know it's going to be more expensive to run but all of our friends with evaporative say evaporative is pretty useless after a few days of hot wheather and considering the 45+ degrees days we had last year it seems like a good idea. Hopefully with some decent blinds and insulation we won't need it that often anyway. The add-on brivis systems utilise the existing heater, so it's important that the heater has a high airflow capacity. The air has to be moved over the coil at a high speed in order for the cooling to be effective. We have a 24sq home, and have purchased the 15kw ICE cooler. However, the heater that came with the unit was the Brivis HE20i - a 5 star rated heater. I've paid an extra $400 to move to the HE30i heater - a 5.5 star rated heater, which has approx %30 better airflow capacity over the HE20i (according to technical specs). Don't be bought and sold on just how high the kw rated aircon system is if you're looking at add-on cooling..... How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5947 Hi all, sorting out the ducted air con for a 350sqm double story house.
