Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jun 08, 2007 10:27 am I recently moved into a 30 year old house. They had very old carpet but the timber underneath was excellent. I took out the carpet as I’m allergic to dust.
Now… I have a new problem. House is getting so cold these days. I suspect it’s because of the cold air coming through the tiny gaps between the timber. Any smart ideas (not so expensive) to overcome this issue? - devank Re: Stop cold coming through timber floor. 2Jun 08, 2007 10:48 am Do you mean coming up through the gaps in the boards? Unusual but possible.
Taking the carpet away will reduce the amount of insulation you had and there are ways around it. I've been doing some research on exactly this because I have removed carpet too and I know the floor is losing heat. Sealing the floor will stop the gaps between boards, but I'd be lighting an incence stick to see if it is drafts comming through gaps. More likely it is the volume of air if coming via the skirting boards and the bigger wall gap created when the carpet was removed. Quad is one way to stop that area leaking, and it makes a big difference. There is more info here that might give you some ideas for insulating underneath the floor. http://www.timber.org.au/resources/R-values%20floor%20elements%20Part%204%20of%204%20-%20Ed%201.1.pdf Steve Hi When it rains in a particular direction water comes through the security door.
