Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 31, 2009 1:58 pm The house we're building comes with R2.5 ceiling insulation. Our builder has quoted the following to upgrade. Gold Batts R3.0 - $759 R3.5 - $911 R4.0 - $1366 R5.0 - $1821 R6.0 - $2125 I was told upgrading would require another 5star rating inspection (or something) and would incur additional costs. Opinions?? Is it worth upgrading from R2.5 to something else? We're in Melbourne. Have no idea about wall insulation they provide. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Cost of Insulation 3Sep 01, 2009 8:46 am Total of house including garage is 21 squares. I think without garage and portico is 16.22 squares. Am tossing up between increasing rating to 3.5 or 4. Is it worth going to four for an extra $400 from the 3.5? Will it make a difference? Are the prices reasonable? I was told they are Gold Batts. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. The difference will be 0.036 watts/sq.m./degree C. At say $0.20/kWhr on a cold day you will hopefully save around 10 cents. Quote: In Melbourne for instance, adding R3.0 to ceilings and R1.5 to walls can save an additional 12% on energy bills each year. At a certain point, depending on the climate, the cost of adding extra insulation is not reflected in substantial savings on energy bills. See page 7 http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/resources/documents/Insulation_types.pdf As for costs - I calculate these based on 18 squares = 167.22m2 total costs for materials ONLY. Total Cost $1,273.17 R2.5 $1,273.17 R3 $1,465.97 R3.5 $1,490.82 R4 So for not much extra R4 is worth it IMO. The above are based on gold batt prices. Re: Cost of Insulation 6Sep 02, 2009 9:12 am Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it. I was told by PD that because we've increased the ceiling height we need to pay $110 for another 5 star rating report. Someone else building with PD said they were told they had to increase insulation to R3.5 to meet the 5 star requirement because they increased ceiling height. Does this sound right? Gold & Pink batts are just different proprietary names for the same thing... fibreglass insulation. This is inert and safe once in place. Looks like… 0 11270 1000000% definitely add insulation. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 6191 |
