Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 28, 2009 1:27 pm Hi, first time poster. I've got some walls off at my house at the moment after removing some asbestos and want to insulate it. Unfortunately wall insulation is in very short supply at the moment (called approx. 30 retailers and was told minimum 8 week wait). I don't want to wait. I have got myself 1 bag of poly batts and I have 26m of 1.2m x 75mm R1.8 roof insulation sheeting (the stuff that goes under a tin roof). This was left over from a recent re-roofing so I plan to use it. It is glasswool on one side and foil on the other. I live in Brisbane and the house is a high set weatherboard home. I plan to staple silver foil/sarking directly onto the weatherboard. I will then cut to size and staple the roofing insulation to the inside edge of the studs (I know I shouldn't staple insulation however considering it is a roll there isn't any other way to secure it in the wall and prevent it falling). Now for the questions: 1. Which way should I install the roofing insulation (should the foil side face the interior or exterior wall)? 2. If the roofing insulation's foil is facing the exterior wall do I need sarking for that one? Should I just staple the insulation to the external wall? 3. Is there anything that should be done to prevent condensation affecting the insulation (the studs are 75mm and so is the insulation batts & roll). 4. What product should I be using for the "sarking"? I assume it does two things, 1 reflects heat and 2. acts as a vapour barrier to try and avoid moisture build up (eg. avoid mould in walls / wood rot) Sorry, I'm new to this renovating thing so my questions might seem stupid. Re: DIY - Wall Insulation - Questions 2Aug 28, 2009 2:14 pm if you need more insulation try fletchers, they make the insulation and do have some stock http://www.insulation.com.au/ someone else with skills can hopefully answer your other questions. Re: DIY - Wall Insulation - Questions 3Aug 28, 2009 2:41 pm Thanks for the suggestion. They are about an hour from my house though unfortunately (so 2hr round trip). I found Higgins Insulation which are closer to me but only have polyester batts ($57 a pack, which is approx $20 more a batt than the Bradfords glasswool batts I was trying to get which is why I thought I may as well just use the insulation roll I have as money is tight as well). Hi Would love some advice on a DIY project I've dived into that's now keeping me up at night.
