Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Aug 11, 2009 8:21 pm With zoned systems the idea is that you only warm the area which are being occupied. This saves on the energy required to heat the entire house. However, I have discovered something quite interesting when managing our newly installed system this winter. Theoretically air flow moves in a circulating path from the grille outlet back to the return grille. The air that needs to be heated should be only located along this path. The reality is that air flow is a bit more chaotic than this. Cold air is drawn in from different direction to the return grille, even from zones which are not being operated. This increases the amount of air that needs to be heated. I have noticed that by closing the doors to non-occupied zones to block this flow pattern that the AC warms the air much faster and efficiently (which I presume reduces the amount of work it needs to do). Funny that no-one told us about this when it was installed. Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
