Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Estimating A/C size 3Aug 10, 2009 7:51 pm TheBoatMan A good general guide for reverse cycle: We recently had an Actron Air dealer (and state head office) tell us they would only sell us a 23kW system and nothing smaller because the smaller systems "couldn't provide enough air flow" (or words to that effect), even though a smaller system was allegedly sufficient based on their heat load calculations. Mind you, from what we can tell, RFL/sarking in the roof, higher-R-rating than average wall and ceiling insulation, eave sizes designed to block summer sun on north facing windows, window orientation, and other passive solar design features (eg double glazing) had no bearing when they determined the required A/C size... Edit: We found a calculator spreadsheet here that at least appears to take into account window orientation and percentage of window to room area: http://www.advantageair.com.au/go/resid ... -downloads (the Ducted Split Design link at the bottom) - though we're not sure how useful/accurate the result are (the heat load numbers came out quite a bit lower than the dealer's calculations for our home). I used to work for a one of Australia's largest home builders (which will remain nameless), and it's the oldest trick in the book to try and get the client to pay overs for a variation.
