Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 27, 2009 11:44 pm Hi all, Our Lennox gas central heating (model G24M, built 1994) has been working well for the 6 years we've been in our house. We've had it serviced once a couple of years ago and apparently all was in order. A couple of days ago, we noticed a burning plastic or maybe burning hair smell coming from all the vents. I've had a look at the furnace to see if there was anything obvious, but realise that the circulated air passes through a sealed box separate from the burning gas (a good thing, I know!). There was no burning plastic smell coming from the gas exhaust vent. I'll probably get a service technician in to service it (probably someone new - any suggestions for the northern Sydney area? - as the last guy was a bit...laissez faire), but would like to investigate further first. It would appear that: 1. Since all the vents are smelling, something is burning in either the return air duct, in the heat exchange area, or soon after that. 2. The easiest way to have a peek inside where the air is heated is to take the duct tape off the return air duct and/or the main outlet duct, as the flanges to which they are taped are siliconed to the furnace. 3. If (2) is true, the most logical place to start should be the outlet duct, as that's nearest the heat exchanger, where I imagine it's plenty hot enough to singe something. Are my assumptions correct? Is there an easier way to get into the sealed area? My thinking is that I could disconnect the duct, have a look inside, and possibly remove something/some animal that has fallen into that part of the furnace and started burning. (I did notice that when I checked the return duct, there was quite a bit of dust inside it, which I thought could indicate that a ball of it has dislodged and flown into the heat exchanger.) Alternatively, I could get a better idea of what's wrong in order to better select a service techician. Thanks!
