Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation 1 Jul 22, 2009 2:00 pm Hello people I want to take advantage of the free insulation for our 35 year old house. The roof is really dusty and when we did our building inspection the inspector noted the dust. So my question is does or doesn't the roof require to be vaccumed to remove the dust before insulation is installed? I get mixed answers. Hireahubby.com.au who i was thinking of getting insulation with said it's not required, but then again they don't offer the service of a clean anyway. However antoher insulation installer said i should have it cleaned first. Apparently it costs like $800 to have the job done, so i don't know what i should do. Please give advice. Thank you Re: New insulation, Old dust 2Jul 22, 2009 2:12 pm There is no reason to remove the existing dust in terms of thermal efficacy. That is, the dust will not reduce the benefit of installing the insulation. I would save the $800 and have the batts installed over the existing dust. Best not to disturb the dust anyway. No he didn't But on theIr sitE, they talk about dust could be bad for your health etc. Re: New insulation, Old dust 6Jul 23, 2009 5:12 pm I don't know, these are just questions that occur to me. Does it matter if there's dust between the ceiling and the batts? What about the dust that will subsequently deposit on top of the batts? Don't insulation installers wear protective gear anyway? Re: New insulation, Old dust 7Jul 23, 2009 6:20 pm There is no problem having dust between the ceiling and the batts. You could have it vacuumed out before the batts are installed. However that will stir up more dust than would be disturbed if batts were plonked on top of the dust. And you are correct, new dust will settle on the batts anyway. Re: New insulation, Old dust 8Jul 31, 2009 11:22 pm I have installed air conditioners in roof spaces with dust, rats, dead rats, spiders, rodents, exposed electrical cables and asbestos. I have never been in a roof space that wasn't dusty! the leaves that are now underground go yellow, the tips that poke through photosynthesise and have chlorophyll, same reason they grow rhubarb in the dark. 5 2912 Is it possible to render an old corrugated iron shed.I have heard that it can be done if it is covered with chicken wire first. Not sure of the ratio of the render mix and… 0 3361 |
