Hello everyone,
What does this mean and what does it look like? Are these batts or just the normal wrap? We are considering asking the builder if we can get on site and put in our batts and more importantly, is it good enough?
thanks in advance!

Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 2Jul 22, 2009 6:16 pm Insulation has an R rating and the higher the rating, the better the insulation properties. We have R1.5 in the walls and R3 in the ceiling, so your quote is even better. They will most likely be rockwool or fibreglass, but you can ask your builder if you want to know. I don't recommend the blow in stuff, especially if you are having downlights as it comes through and makes the place dusty. If your builder's quote is in your budget then get them to do it as it's a horrible messy job. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 3Jul 22, 2009 9:52 pm Thanks you Hels, The info you have provided is incredibly helpful! Dh and I are talking about putting in the insualtion for the internal walls ourselves...but not today....we just moved all the extra/unused bricks to the back of the house as the builder advised us to move whatever we wanted to the back as they were bringing in the bobcat to do a bit of a cleanup before the next stage commences. i was at work, so dh bascially moved close to 200 bricks by himself so tired these days.... or is it just me Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 4Jul 22, 2009 10:28 pm We have R3 to ceiling R2 to walls we hope this will be good enough, but the builder didn't include insulation to the garage or alfresco, we paid extra for it to be put into those places thinking it will help, we have a colourbond roof and many people have said that sarking is very good but unfortunately we are too far along to include it now and it probably wouldn't fit into the budget with everything else. Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 5Jul 23, 2009 10:24 am I know what you mean vid, our roof is colourbond as well and we didnt have sarking put in...and yes insulation for garage etc is an extra (which we didnt get)....I think the insulation you are currently getting is better than standard...however, if you cant upgrade your insulation or if it costs too much, perhaps like Hels & Thorney, get permission from the builder to do the insulation yourself for the internal walls as there are benefit like acoustics etc. We are still contemplating this...actually i think we are being a bit lazy Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 6Jul 23, 2009 2:29 pm blessedpeople I know what you mean vid, our roof is colourbond as well and we didnt have sarking put in...and yes insulation for garage etc is an extra (which we didnt get)....I think the insulation you are currently getting is better than standard...however, if you cant upgrade your insulation or if it costs too much, perhaps like Hels & Thorney, get permission from the builder to do the insulation yourself for the internal walls as there are benefit like acoustics etc. We are still contemplating this...actually i think we are being a bit lazy We have also ordered the sound insulation for all the internal walls, hopefully this will help us adjust from living in solid brick houses all of our lives. Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 7Jul 24, 2009 12:17 am Heya blessed, I think the R value of insulation is determined by where you live. there is a website link somewhere on these forums that has the recommended R values for your area. With ours, our builder provided 3.5 to the ceiling and 2.0 for external walls plus external wrapping and sarking to the roof. As you know, we did our own insulation (1.5) for the internal walls. We did half in poly and half in acoustic (for the noisier areas). The poly batts were a bit fiddly to install due to there softness (think pillows, lol) and the acoustic (fibreglass) l found really easy to do. Now l was covered up to the hilt to avoid itchiness which worked, though it got a bit unpleasant at times breathing through a mask and the goggles fogging up! We spent about $850 all up and did every internal wall in our house (which is large) bar 3-4 small walls... Our house should be finished in August and we are off to sunny Noosa for a week at the end of Sept Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Your welcome blessed And yep that's the document. If your looking at doing the insulation then get onto it like NOW!! ....It is really really hard to get at the moment and likely for a long time yet with the batts with the gov't rebate that's going on. Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 11Aug 05, 2009 10:26 am Hi Thorney, I spoke to DH and we will not be doing it this time around we went to Bunnings ( 2 of them) and they were sold out and we didn't want the builder to delay any longer so we asked him to proceed without (esternal insulation was completed last week & plastering is now underway but as it gets dark early these days we havent had a chance to take any photos and update our thread)...maybe we will do it when we build next time around...You mentioned the gov't rebates...you mean you got money back ???? Re: What is Insulation: R2.0 External Walls & R4.0 Ceiling ? 12Aug 05, 2009 12:22 pm Hi, I went to the website to have a look..... now in this table does it mean that higher the number the better insulation the product is on its own? Ah bummer blessed...ah well what can you do? Nah we didn't get the gov't rebate....it's only for existing homes. But because the rebate exists, the demand for insulation has skyrocketed. l have heard that because of it, some manufacturers are concentrating on making the ceiling insulation to meet demand and producing less wall insulation as a result. Found the answer. The recommended distance is .... 1 6228 Thank you @ashington Homes for your reply! They just got back to me and offered credit for me to just take it as is.
